Christmas Parade In Richmond IN

Below you can watch part of the Christmas Parade in Richmond, which took place this past Friday night.  People lined the streets, in very cold temperatures, and though the quality of the video isn’t great, you can hear the excitement of the children as they watch the floats and mascots go by.  It was worth freezing to see.  And later we went to the Coop to purchase yummy snacks and hair ribbons- it was a fun night! For more pictures and video of the holiday season you can visit our Facebook site (GoWayneCounty) or our youtube site- also under GoWayneCounty. (see video below)

Locally Owned Toy Store Featured In Country Living Magazine

Copy (2) of veach's block party 012

Veach’s, locally owned and operated in Richmond for many decades, is featured in the current edition of Country Living Magazine.

Sitting at my aunt’s table tonight,  it was quite exciting to see the store we grew up with featured in a national magazine which recognized the success and longevity of the toy store, which was once a five and dime when it began in the 30′s.

Shown in the picture highlighted in Country Living Magazine, are the current owner and his granddaughter Baleigh standing amongst the wonderful display of trains available at their store.  There is also mention of John Veach, son, and also manager of the daily operations at Veaches.

Mr Veach demonstrating a toy this summer

Memories of the birthday castle and the changes the store has gone through came flooding back as I read the article touting the achievements of maintaining a locally owned store.

When you are looking for that unique toy  or game for your special child this Christmas remember Veach’s, a now nationally recognized store in our midst, with the same hometown feel that has served us all from our own childhoods to our children’s.

Final Home Game Of Richmond RiverRats Season Plays To Packed Stadium

Ashley Madill Celebrates Victory

Rivie entertains the crowd

Excitement was in the air as hundreds of people lined the streets with cars and walked to the final home game of the season, packing the stadium. (See video below)

Some said as they enjoyed the game that they had intended to go all summer and didn’t realize that the final game was here so soon.  And what a game to end the season at home.  After going into an extra inning the RiverRats won it all with bases loaded and scoring a run to win the night.

The crowd cheered for the victory, but the excitement didn’t end there.  Several host families were honored for their efforts this summer in housing and caring for one or more players.

Finally came the fireworks and they were awesome!  Gleeful cheers could be heard from children all over the stadium (young and old) who were astonished by the display both in brightness and the overpowering force.  Just as they seemed to end another round would go up to the amazement of all present.

What a great season!  We are proud to have the RiverRats as our home team. Season tickets are already on sale for next year- so plan ahead to see exciting baseball played right in our own backyard.

Demolition of a landmark in Centerville/Wayne County Underway…

christmas pics and natco demolition 058

The old Natco is in the process of being torn down, and as you drive by you can witness the end to a long era.

Once a workplace to many parents and grandparents –and maybe great grandparents in Wayne County (including our grandpa Dennis Kendall) most of the site will be demolished for new endeavors.

If you have a story of the time you–or a family member—worked at Natco we would love for you to comment at the bottom of this blog with details.

According to the history blog by Dan Tate, in “1960-61 the NATCO operation is continued at the South N Street facility, until it was announced NATCO would purchase the former Bucyrus-Erie property [located in Centerville] and move their operation to that location in April, 1961.”

Old NATCO building coming down

The Bucyrus Erie property above is the current building located in Centerville built in 1909 for another factory and then used for NATCO once it was moved from it’s original site in Richmond in 1961.  Much earlier in 1909 the defunct NATCO of Dayton, Ohio, was acquired by W.F. Bockhoff and moved to Richmond, Indiana.

In 1990 it was reported that NATCO would close its doors after 89 years in business in Wayne County.  It was later bought by Charlie Mosey and used for warehousing and continued under different ownership in that same manner up until the recent purchase and demolition.

The current plan is to save the front office area of NATCO while the rest will be taken down.  As you can see in the picture above, the old NATCO sign is about ready to fall after decades atop the well known site of memories for many who worked there and drove past the building for decades.

We can now all look forward to what this new development will bring to Wayne County  (many in Wayne County would love to see an Olive Garden or Panera Bread in that location–and a nice shopping plaza).

Live Music, Good Food & Shops In The Depot District, Richmond IN

Holidays In The Depot District

In the past when we ran through the checklist of locally owned restaurants that are open in the evening, we used to be frustrated with the few choices.

But last week we had three great experiences in the Depot District in Richmond.  Earlier in the week we went to our old favorite, Joe’s Pizza, to have the pizza and salad buffet.  The pizza is always fresh with a large variety on the bar (my favorites are the spinach and vegetable pizzas).  They also carry specialty pizzas and sandwiches that you can order separate from the bar.  We have enjoyed Friday nights there listening to pianist Carol Lou and friends, playing old time favorites.

After our meal at Joe’s we walked down to Parker’s General Store (Mitrione’s) and picked out some yummy desserts and also got some Christmas shopping done.  Besides adding hot foods and a salad bar along with a new soda pop fountain with sodas, sundaes and other yummy treats, they also carry unique gift and food items.  If you are in the market for old fashioned toys or special wines, they carry those and much more.

And on Friday night we went back to the Depot District to eat at Little Sheba’s, one of three restaurants in the Depot District open in the evenings.  I enjoyed a veggie burger on flat bread and later we shared a slice of cheesecake.  While we ate we listened to the live music of Randy Baker, his son Brian on guitar and professional bass guitar player Bill.    Owner of Little Sheba’s, Steve Terzini, said that they incorporate live music on weekends and that Baker and friends are a regular there at least once a month. (see video below)

Shops open later for the holiday season…

Not only are there great places to eat, but there are shops open later for the holiday season.  Across the street from Little Sheba’s you will find Richmond Furniture Gallery open and ready for business.  Right next to Sheba’s is The Good Life Emporium has natural cotton t-shirts, jackets, mugs and more.  One idea is to go early to shop at stores, like the Railroad Store and antique shops, that close at 6:00 and then have dinner after.

In the video below you can see and hear Randy Baker and friends.  (Little Sheba’s was packed last Friday so you will also hear the background noise of people having a great time).  Enjoy the video and remember the next time you are looking for a great food experience in the evening–check out one of the restaurants at the Depot District in Richmond IN.

Looking Back: Memories of the Rose Festival

Old Promenade Site of Many Past Rose Festival Activities

By Mary Mills, Member Contributor

Old Promenade Site of Many Past Rose Festival Activities

“Taking myself back to the days when I was growing up, I remember counting the days until The Rose Festival started up. Spending time throughout the week at this festival was fun.

We would walk up to the promenade, where they had it full of activities from South 6th St – South 10th St. The activities would range from amusement rides, food vendors and tables with all kinds of novelties.

This festival had special events that brought in a nice crowd, like the time they made the huge apple pie or the giant cookie.

The Rose Festival Parade and the crowning of The Rose Queen was part of honoring the rose industry, along with the festival.

This rose industry was Hills’ Roses. Hills’ Roses opened up in 1881 and closed it’s doors in 2007.

It is sad to remember as the years passed by, this festival became smaller and smaller every year. And now it is a part of history just like Hills Roses.  When you talk to today’s generation, they don’t remember the Rose Festival.”

Editor’s Note: We are fortunate that older area festivals like those in Hagerstown, Cambridge City, Centerville, and others are still going strong.  And in Richmond, many people work hard each year to revive the feeling of the Rose Festival with celebrations like: the Heritage Festival, Starr Gennett Induction concerts, and the Kids Parade and other exciting events throughout the summer.  Those of us who grew up with the Rose Festival have fond memories attached to our childhood from those years, which are now an important part of the history of Richmond.
