Enjoying Oktoberfest 2011

Oktoberfest 2011 In The Depot District

This year’s Octoberfest did not disappoint as it was bigger and better than last year!  There was something for everyone from live music, delicious foods of all kinds, face painting, fresh baked goods, German foods cheesecake….and so much more!

The crowd gathered as the tricycle races began with teams competing for over 150.00 worth of gift  certificates from area merchants.  (see video below)  After several “heats” the overall champions of the day were the Johnson Boys team.

Two stages of live music played throughout the day, one in front of Steve Terzini’s Little Shebas and another stage in the beer garden by Joe’s Pizza.  (See more videos of live music at our Go Wayne County youtube site).

Kids enjoyed the bouncers throughout the fest as well as yummy soft ice cream and cotton candy- there were even hot apple dumplings.

The "Johnson Boys" team congratulate each other on winning the Tricycle Race

If you missed Oktoberfest this year

- no worries it will be back next year at the same time.  It gets better every year, thanks to all the sponsors and people who help organize this event.

Can You Date These Antique Street Bricks?

Attention Richmond History Buffs!

GWC has received a request from Tim Beard, of Van Buren, Ohio about the age of Antique Bricks he recently acquired.   GWC would like to know, too!   Please check out his request below along with the pictures he provided.   Post in comments if you can help him out with dating these beautiful historical bricks of Richmond, Indiana streets.

richmond indiana antique street bricks

I am interested in inquiring historical information on these paver bricks.  We acquired over 400 of them at an Estate sale.  They were advertised as Antique Street Bricks from Richmond Indiana.  We are restoring our 1835 home back to originality of the era and was interested in if these bricks are from the 1800′s or 1900′s.  We plan on using some for our front sidewalks.  Any information for us would be greatly appreciated.

Hosts Brian Elstro and Megan Eversole

Hello All.  After my brief hiatus it was really great to see you out again at the E Street Pub.  The music has only gotten better and better.  We really need more shows like this one around town.

The show last night was hosted by one of the most talented people I know Megan Eversole, and co-hosted by none other than Mr. Grumbles himself the awesome drummer Brian Elstro.  And there were so many great musicians; just like always.  I feel like writing about this event can and may have become redundant, but until you come down and see it for yourself.. and yes I’m talking to you.. you will listen (i.e. read) to every single word I have to say (i.e. type).  I kid, I kid.  But seriously do yourself a favor and come down and join us next Thursday night at E Street.  It’s a friendly environment and no one will force you to drink if you don’t wanna.  Just come see what amazing musicians Richmond has to offer.

Paradise on Roosevelt Hill..Concert Series In Richmond

Parrots of the Carribean 2010

Another successful event by the Richmond Parks and Recreation Department, the first in the Summer Concert Series was a hit with all who attended.  Some families on the hill had even traveled quite a distance for this concert.

Playing to a large crowd of hundreds scattered across Roosevelt Hill, Parrots of the Caribbean got people on their feet, dancing, clapping and singing the well-known words of Jimmy Buffet songs.

The lead singer had several humorous costume changes through the show, and the crowd was entertained by a very large shark that started a Conga line through the spectators on the hill.

The evening was cool and crisp, a perfect night for the first concert.

To read about the next concerts in the series go to GoWayneCounty.com.

Kicks 96 and Fricker’s: Wayne County Idol Finals at the 4-H Fairgrounds

Winner Megan New!

The Frickin' Chicken Crew and The Buddha from Kicks96

Saturday night was another exciting competition of the seven finalists in the Wayne County Idol, sponsored by Kicks 96 and Fricker’s.  All the women were exceptional and the crowd, of around 250 people, showed their enthusiasm and support for each contestant with cheers and clapping to the music.

When asked, by the Buddha from Kicks 96, how they prepared for the evenings competition contestants had answers similar to Brandi Browns who said she “cleaned her house and did laundry.”  She added that her five year old got a little tired of her practicing all day as she cleaned.

First contestant of the night was Megan New who sang “Anyway” by Martina McBride.  It was a strong performance and one of the emcees of the event commented that it was, “a great way to start the night.”

The difficulty of being a judge had to be great as all the contestants gave strong performances on at least one if not both of their song choices.

The other contestants included: Paula Stout, Brandi Brown, Shandy Kemp, Jessica Phenis (who also wrote both her songs), Becky Lovely, and Shea Thomas.

Winner: Megan New!

In the end there could be only one winner and that was newcomer, Megan New –just 19 years old and competing for the first time.  She definitely gave two strong performances, her second song choice being “Cowboy Cassanova.”  She will receive the $1,000 prize given by Fricker’s and Kicks 96 as well as a 100.00 gift certificate.  Second place and a 75.00 gift certificate from Fricker’s went to Brandi Brown.  Third place and a $50.00 gift certificate went to Shea Thomas who clearly had the biggest fan club, many in baby blue t-shirts.

It was an exciting night and as we’ve said before, all the contestants should be proud of their performances.  On such a hot and steamy night they all pulled out their best voices under challenging circumstances and entertained all of us watching.  We look forward to next year and seeing these contestants return.

1860′s Fashion Show At Wayne County Fair Grounds

4-H Fair period dress

Teresa Downs, professional reenactor, explains women and girls fashion during the Civil War Era.  Her daughter Sarah assists her as they dress their young model.

4-H Fair period dress

MC of the Period Fashion Show, Teresa Downs

As they dress Emily Engle, Teresa explains all the layers a young girl would have worn.  They are in order as follows:

First come the stockings which were very colorful and were worn with a garter.  These are followed by several layers of underclothing including: pantelettes made from muslin, worn from knee to calf, a chemise which caught the perspiration, a corset which was worn as young as two years old and also by men (called “belly binders”).

Sarah Downs helping Emily Engle getting dressed

Unlike in Gone With the Wind, the corsets were put on by lying on the floor, someone stepping on your back and pulling on the strings.  They were even worn during pregnancy, according to Teresa.

Then came the corset cover, with buttons made from china or mother of pearl.  Next the petticoats (3 in summer 10 in winter)  which kept women and girls from tripping on dresses.  Finally the hoop, hoop cover and then the dress.  Whew!  I got tired just watching the process!

Teresa also shared that the color and pattern combinations were horrid in this time period sometimes wearing checks and lines together.  They did wear bonnets to keep their complexion light which was a sign of prosperity.  They were like wearing blinders.

The shoes women wore were more like boots and according to young Sarah Downs they are “slicker than snot!”  They were also very uncomfortable.

Boys wore dresses up to the age of three and the only way to distinguish between boys and girls was the part in their hair.  Females always wore their hair part in the middle.  The boys wore the hoops and all undergarments like the girls did.

Sidney Braff is asked if she is of courting age

One young girl in the crowd was asked if she was of marital age.  Of course she giggled and said no, but Teresa explained that only girls who were ready for suitors wore earrings.

All I can say is thank goodness for shorts–it is a hot day and I can’t imagine wearing all those layers!  But it was a very interesting show.
