As a continuation of our focus on “Buying Local” we want to remind you that this Saturday, November 26, 2011 is “Small Business Saturday. (see video below)

Remember as you check off items on your Holiday shopping list that you shop for them at locally owned small businesses in Wayne County. The possibilities are endless and include gift certificates from your favorite family owned and operated restaurant, unique toys from Veache’s, fine furniture at great prices from Richmond Furniture Gallery and unique gifts from shops all over Wayne County including Parker’s General Store with old fashioned candies, toys, tools, wines and beers and much more. For other choices in wines, add J & J Winery to your list and for fudge and other sweets- the Pour House in Cambridge City…and the list goes on and on.

If you are an antique lover, you won’t want to miss the Antique Fair this Saturday in the quaint town of Cambridge City, IN.

Vendors Expected to Line the Streets

Held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., side roads will be closed in order to accommodate all the antique vendors expected to line the streets, according to Vicki Alexander, owner of Undiscovered Treasures, a unique consignment store in Cambridge.

Many other shops will be open for business including the Pour House- home of the best homemade fudge around Wayne County and other homemade delicacies and lunch menu items.  For a great country style breakfast you can start your day at Lumpy’s Cafe on Foote Street.

Joy Ann Bakery in Richmond has baked goods that can be personalized such as giant cookies, cakes and pies.  One of the oldest locally owned businesses in Wayne County, you know you are getting old favorites there that your Valentine will love. (like the thumbprint cookies…yum!)

Ghyslain in Richmond IN is a newer chocolateur to the area, managed locally, that is getting high marks in the Yum category.  You can take your Valentine there to eat or pick up a scrumptious dessert for your special meal at home.

Olympian Candies in Richmond IN is locally owned and has a reputation for satisfying the sweet tooth.  They carry a large variety of candies to suit anyone’s taste (anything for the diabetics?).  It’s another good place to stop and impress the candy lover in your life.

Chocolate Trail- Wayne County

Stop at the Visitors Center on the east side of Richmond and pick up your Chocolate Trail passport.  You can spend the weekend trying out chocolates, fudge and even chocolate wine from several places in Wayne County.  What a great way to impress a chocolate lover!

Swing Station Salsa Night Benefit Concert Friday, February 11, 2010 for the dancers out there– Earlham’s Big Band Jazz Ensemble and the Salsa Band share the stage for a great night of dance music.  Bring your dancing shoes!  Proceeds benefit the United Way of Richmond.  Tickets: $5.00/adults & $3.00/ students and seniors.

A Toasty Fire at the Log House Antiques

Luminaries lined the streets last night as we drove into Cambridge.  Storefronts were decorated with twinkly lights, and carolers roamed the streets singing songs of cheer while the lighted parade came down the street amidst cries of “Santa” and “Merry Christmas” from the large crowd that had gathered.

It was a merry night as we entered one cheerful shop after another to get warm and shop for presents.  Each shop offered goodies for the children and refreshments.  At the Log House antiques there was hot cider and yummy chocolate caramel bars and cookies.  People gathered around the open fire in the hearth and warmed themselves.

Across the street at building 125 there were bags of goodies for the kids as well as at the Pour House a few doors down–many shops had drawings for door prizes.  The floral shop, Roses and Rainbows,  gave away light up snowmen to the children and had discounts store wide.

Creitz Park in Cambridge City

We ended the night with a drive through Creitz Park in Cambridge, just off the main street, to see the beautiful light display.  And at the end, we got to visit Santa at the fire station and enter another drawing for prizes.

will run until the end of the holiday season on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.  It is worth the drive and the 5.00 donation per carload to see it!

just across the street will be hosting an open house as well.  Hours will be from 10 – 7 p.m.  Three floors of antiques and decorative items with new Christmas decor and great gift ideas for buying local!

Friday, November 12, 7pm – 10pm

Live music by groups like Garcia and Scott. Eight wineries, including J & J Winery, will offer wine tasting treats such as the “winerita” Every 25.00 ticket receives a free souvenir glass, and there will also be hors douvres and desserts. You can purchase tickets at Little Sheba’s, Joes Pizza, Mitrione’s, and VanVleet Insurance. Food, Antiques, and Architecture In Cambridge City

Took another wonderful little trip to Cambridge City the other day. Hit our favorite shops. The Pour House for lunch, of course.

All the old buildings on National Road are so interesting, and this one is especially so. It’s actually called the Pour House Antiques and Cafe.

Location: 109 W. Main St. (U.S. 40).

Hours: Tues.-Sat. 9-5; Sun. 11-4.

The lunch fare is outstanding and this time I got the chicken salad wrap, which includes potato salad, chips and a pickle. YUM! Just had a coke to go with it, because we start our shopping with lunch, and then end the trip with a delicious coffee drink at the same place.

(For more down home cooking you might try Lumpy’s restaurant…also delicious.)

Then we meander down to Building 125…

Location: 125 W Main St. (U.S. 40).

Hours: Tue.-Thurs. 10-5;  Fri. 10-4; Sat. 10-5

Here you can enjoy 3 floors of antiques in a beautifully restored old bldg.

A newly opened store is the Log House Antiques across 40 and there are 3 floors of goodies there also. Beautiful jewelry, antiques and great decorating ideas.

The Hole in the Wall Antiques is absolutely packed w/ things that bring back memories of another time. We do so miss Cows in the Creek. Vicky has the most wonderful ideas for decorating, and we hope she returns soon.

All of these great places are included in Antique Alley on U.S. 40.

Centerville and Webb’s Antique Mall, The Olde Brass Hog, etc.  And I must say the owners and helpers are so kind and knowlegeable.

Back at the Pour House we had delicious, special hot coffee drinks on that chilly day, and were offered biscotti or muffins, pie or homemade fudge. GO! … and enjoy.
