This past weekend we were reminded of how fortunate we are to live in a community that has a well known and highly regarded liberal arts college like Earlham. And one of the many perks is that we get to witness musical events like the East Village Opera Company on Saturday night. (See video below)
It is an amazing experience to sit in the audience and savor such talent. The vocalists were incredible and the musicians were energetic, engaged and highly talented.
One felt transported, as if sitting in Carnegie Hall or on Broadway. It seemed surreal to be in a small Midwestern town enjoying the caliber of music that the East Village Opera Company brought to us on Saturday night.
The opera pieces, set to contemporary music with backup including drums, bass, violins, cello and guitar, were stirring. And all ages in the audience were moved and involved with the music, while the room was alive with the awe shared by the crowd of over 500 people.
“300 year old songs set to such contemporary music”
Following the performance professor of metal arts Nathan Jones and his wife Linda said they were just amazed at “300 year old songs set to such contemporary music.” They shared that “they didn’t know what to expect!” But both agreed it was amazing. The look on their young daughter Lucia’s face said everything. With twinkling eyes and a broad smile no words were needed.
Lynn Knight, in charge of events at Earlham, shared that this was the group’s first performance together in a year and they chose to come together at Earlham College. We are fortunate that we were able to witness their performance together.
Male vocalist Tyley Ross
said, about performing at Earlham, that the “size of the venue was more intimate” and he enjoyed being able to engage a responsive audience. Tyley, lead female vocalist AnnMarie Milazzo and the other performers are all involved in projects individually as well. You can Google them to see what they have coming up next. Peter Kiesewalter co-partner of the group was recently written up in the New York Times.
