Cruise-In July 1st, 2011, GWC

Cruise-In July 1st, 2011, GWC

Last night the place to be was in the Depot District, to begin the long 4th of July weekend.

As the steam of the day started to leave issuing in a cool breeze, people gathered to enjoy the Cruise In.

Timeless music filled the air as the crowd milled about listening to the live band, eating, visiting with one another and taking a tour of the many classic cars surrounding the beer garden.

The parking lot and under the overpass was filled to capacity with vehicles of all eras from the 1920’s to the 60’s.

Carol Lou & Friends at Joe's Pizza, Depot District

Next to the beer garden, Joe’s pizza was filled to capacity with people enjoying the amazing sounds of Carol Lou and friends.  Decades of musical talent were there last night as the oldies were enjoyed over pizza and laughter.

Carol Lou is a regular at Joe’s pizza on Friday nights, and the Cruise –In at the Depot is a new regular – every first Friday of the month.

Coming Up…

Also on tap this weekend will be the Blast At The Overpass in the Depot District on Sunday.  Gates will open at 3:00 with bands playing up to the arrival of the special guest band.  (see article- what’s happening this weekend).  Cost is 8.00/person and tickets can be purchased ahead at Mitriones and Joes Pizza.

The Blast At The Overpass is part of the InConcert series also sponsored by Warm Glow Candles.  Rick Parker of Parker’s General Store, Mitrione’s and 4th Floor Blues is to be thanked for bringing this kind of “big city” entertainment to our town.

E Street Pub: Live Bands

Every Saturday night the E. Street Pub, located in the Depot District in Richmond, offers live music by local bands as well as others who travel to the Pub to perform.  If you love live music this is a local option set right in the historic Depot District.  Music starts at 8:00 p.m. and goes on through the evening.  A low cover charge may be collected at the door.

Is E Street Pub Too Big For Richmond?

e street pub punk night

e street pub punk nightWe often hear (as most people who aren’t in Chicago, LA, or New York do) that there isn’t enough to do in Richmond.  And when we hear that we often laugh.

You might not be into all kinds of music.  You might not be into going to smoky bars all the time. But never let it be said that Richmond doesn’t attract quality bands from all over the region across a broad range of musical styles.

And E Street Pub is right in the middle of the scene. Tonight you could have closed your eyes and imagined you were in a world-class venue in a major city.  All the elements were present except for the kind of crowd such a show deserves.

Long gone are the terrible local garage bands with no skill, terrible sound, and junior high school talent.  If that’s what you think of when you think live music in Wayne County, it’s time to change your thinking.

Tonight was a punk-themed night with 4 bands:

Safety Pin

A local band with Brian Wells on guitar and vocals, Jason Carter on bass, and Brian Elstro on drums.  Pin played a crazy Marcy Playground cover tonight along with a tight, inspired punk set.  Follow Safety Pin on Facebook.

Switchblade Syndicate

From Kentucky (yes, though people who live around Richmond might not want to make a drive all the way to E Street, the bands come from far away just to play here) this band rocked the stage with a lighter style when it comes to true punk music.  But their presence and showman (woman) ship was spot on. Follow on Facebook.

situation red punk rockSituation Red

This was true punk.  These guys hail from Cincinnati and they came to play – HARD.  Lots of original tunes and some covers.  They had Richmond’s own “Joan Jett” out of her seat and into what can only be described as a tizzy.  Much respect from true punk fans in attendance.

misunderstood richmond indiana punk rockMisunderstood

From Richmond, this band does punk justice.  Follow them on Facebook and support quality local musicians!

Bottom line: When it comes to live music, whether it is open mic, 80′s bands, tribute bands, originals, or cover bands, E Street Pub has something going on that rivals anything you’d see in places 100 times our size.

Richmond is still very much a music town.  The popular genres have changed along with the times, but this area is set, once again, to be a major hub for musicians to showcase their talent from all over the Midwest. How many towns like ours get a second chance?

Whatever your favorite music is, Richmond and surrounding towns attract it.

The amount of revenue this town can generate from the music scene alone is revenue we desperately need.  Buying local is sometimes just a matter of showing up and making entertainment choices beyond watching Dancing With The Stars.

There are no boring towns.  Just boring people.

Bringing the life back to the communities of Wayne County is partly about us locals showing up when great events  happen in our area (organized by people who work really hard to put together great entertainment experiences).

Special thanks to Brad Bales for attracting bands of all kinds to Richmond.  And to Brian Elstro for his hard work to give traveling and local bands a top-notch sound experience.

Support great local groups and enjoy great local bands this Friday!

e street pub bicentennial bashThere have already been some great ways to celebrate Wayne county’s bicentennial this summer, and many more on the way.  One event near and dear to our hearts is the Bicentennial Bash at E Street Pub this Friday.

It is sponsored by Go Wayne County and E Street Pub, and promises to be a killer night out for people who love to support and enjoy local bands who cover a wide range of genres.

In addition to providing nearly 8 hours of some of the best Wayne County has to offer in live music, there will be raffles throughout the night to give away some great schwag to attendees to support great local non-profits.

e street pubHere is the lineup for the evening:

  • Brian Dannaker
  • Craig Wynne
  • Megan Eversole
  • Bryan Baker & Doug Wright
  • (Return of) Safety Pin
  • 8 Ways from Nothing
  • Lipstick
  • Spires of Altum

Admission is only 5 bucks! 3 bucks for early purchase.
You can also purchase more tickets if you so desire. $1 a piece or 6 for $5.

Back To E Street

gravel - the band - the myth

Hosts Brian Elstro and Megan Eversole

Hello All.  After my brief hiatus it was really great to see you out again at the E Street Pub.  The music has only gotten better and better.  We really need more shows like this one around town.

The show last night was hosted by one of the most talented people I know Megan Eversole, and co-hosted by none other than Mr. Grumbles himself the awesome drummer Brian Elstro.  And there were so many great musicians; just like always.  I feel like writing about this event can and may have become redundant, but until you come down and see it for yourself.. and yes I’m talking to you.. you will listen (i.e. read) to every single word I have to say (i.e. type).  I kid, I kid.  But seriously do yourself a favor and come down and join us next Thursday night at E Street.  It’s a friendly environment and no one will force you to drink if you don’t wanna.  Just come see what amazing musicians Richmond has to offer.

Recap of G101.3 Battle of Bands

We had a great time watching the bands compete this past weekend at the Elks Country Club. There was quite a turn out of all ages. The bands really gave it their all and we all came out winners of this event.

Great concessions and bands promoting their gear. Some of the bands, Lipstick in particular, gave out tickets to upcoming events and other shows. I believe Shannon Scott, Lipstick’s drummer, gave out a drumstick or two.

Local businesses were there promoting their venues and offering coupons. It was a good family outing with some great live music!

Bands Lipstick and Torso Down will both be headlining Freedom Jam during the 4th of July weekend.

Rocking the Gorge

Gorge 2009

Local man Brad Bales has been putting on an event for the past several years called Rocking the Gorge.  I had a chance to talk to him about it and all it entails.

Brad Bales, Founder of Rocking the Gorge

GWC: So, Brad what is Rocking the Gorge?

Bales:  It’s a 2 day music festival that benefits the local Rose City BMX track. The show helps pay for all operating costs at the track.

GWC: When did you start this event?

Bales:  I threw it together in 2006. Then I only had one day and 6 bands.  I think I threw it together in like a few weeks; the track maybe made 100 bucks… lol, but it has went from this little joke of a show to what it is today. 2 days of local and regional music (mainly local).  I have vendors, food and retail.  Also I have a local wrestling organization that comes and puts on matches when bands are on change over! And I’ve got a lot of new stuff planned this year!

GWC:  Why did you start this event?

Bales: It’s a fundraiser for one of the oldest non for profit clubs in Richmond, Indiana the Rose City BMX Club.  The Club has been around for over 30 plus years giving kids and adults a place to race BMX!  This year I’ve had a lot of sponsors step up so this should be the best year ever!!

The Gennett Building in the Gorge

GWC:  Who will be playing there this year?

Bales:  All kinds of great acts. To be fair let me just give ya the line up!!

GWC:  Is there any special reason for holding the event in the gorge?

Bales:  At first no…but the more I read and the more I learned about the history of that whole area I realized there’s not a better place to have a event like this at! The whole aura of the place is amazing! Everyone who comes falls in love with the place. It’s just a great asset to this city and some people do not even know its here!!!

So come on out and support Great Live Music! and a Great cause.  GoWayneCounty is pleased to be one of the sponsors for this event!
