The Depot District “Cruise In” Live Music Under The Overpass

Cruise-In July 1st, 2011, GWC

Cruise-In July 1st, 2011, GWC

Last night the place to be was in the Depot District, to begin the long 4th of July weekend.

As the steam of the day started to leave issuing in a cool breeze, people gathered to enjoy the Cruise In.

Timeless music filled the air as the crowd milled about listening to the live band, eating, visiting with one another and taking a tour of the many classic cars surrounding the beer garden.

The parking lot and under the overpass was filled to capacity with vehicles of all eras from the 1920’s to the 60’s.

Carol Lou & Friends at Joe's Pizza, Depot District

Next to the beer garden, Joe’s pizza was filled to capacity with people enjoying the amazing sounds of Carol Lou and friends.  Decades of musical talent were there last night as the oldies were enjoyed over pizza and laughter.

Carol Lou is a regular at Joe’s pizza on Friday nights, and the Cruise –In at the Depot is a new regular – every first Friday of the month.

Coming Up…

Also on tap this weekend will be the Blast At The Overpass in the Depot District on Sunday.  Gates will open at 3:00 with bands playing up to the arrival of the special guest band.  (see article- what’s happening this weekend).  Cost is 8.00/person and tickets can be purchased ahead at Mitriones and Joes Pizza.

The Blast At The Overpass is part of the InConcert series also sponsored by Warm Glow Candles.  Rick Parker of Parker’s General Store, Mitrione’s and 4th Floor Blues is to be thanked for bringing this kind of “big city” entertainment to our town.

This was a great way to start the weekend with more to come. (For more pictures of this event go to the Go Wayne County Facebook site).

Dancing The Night Away At The Dream Keepers Dance

As soon as the DJ started the music, people of all ages were up and dancing with bright smiles.  It was the beginning of a great night for everyone.

Michelle Satterfield of the Independent Living Center shared, “We really had a very good time. Thank you so much to everyone that attended.” The dance was a major culminating event to celebrate Disability Awareness Month.

Later in the evening many people joined in enthusiastically with Karaoke, belting out songs that meant a lot to them.  Some in groups and others singing solo–all were excited to participate even if it was their first time.

Earlham Student volunteers helped with serving food, entertaining guests, checking coats and all sorts of other things to make the evening go smoothly.  Many thanks must be given to them for all their hard work and enthusiasm.

Jennie, who was the winner of the GoWayneCounty.com gift bag which included a bear from the Wayne County Tourism Bureau, had a wonderful time dancing in her new dress.  Her mother, Susan Kuhens, wrote later that “It was an absolutely awesome night for everyone.”

Missy Watts, Behind Local Businesses Door Prize Table, From The Independent Living Center

Many other wonderful businesses donated door prizes including: Reid Hospital, Readmore etc., Starbucks, RiverRats, Cosmotique, Warm Glow Candles, Medfit, Fecher’s Panache, Showroom Details, and the Independent Living Center of Eastern Indiana.  Financial contributions were made as well and the list of the generous businesses can be seen at the ILC Facebook site, along with pictures from the dance.

Joe’s Pizza, Mercurios, and Chipotle

Some of the food was donated by Joe’s Pizza, Mercurios, and Chipotle, while the rest was prepared by the RHS cafeteria. (thanks to Maggie for help with coordinating food and Andy with set up and tear down and everything in between-and RHS for donating the Space).

Three beautiful cakes were made and donated by Beth Makovic from “Carpe Diem Cakes,” including one with a rainbow and children, another with flowers and one filled in the center with fresh strawberries.  Of course, they were a big hit.

Having Fun With Karaoke

There were also high school volunteers from RHS, under the direction of Chris Lopresti,  who came in the night before and transformed the cafeteria into a “dreamy” venue.  The room was decorated with stars, trees lit with tiny white lights and a beautiful sign at the entry welcoming all to the dance.

Mayor Sally Hutton and Christi Gigliotti, Director of IL Services at Independent Living Center

Mayor Sally Hutton arrived a bit later, after attending two other community engagements, to thank everyone who organized the Dream Keepers Dance.  This first annual dance was brought to the community by the partnership of the Independent Living Center, Wayne County Minority Health Coalition, Richmond High School, and the Human Rights Commission of Richmond.

Joe’s Pizza Changes Ownership

Jason Whitney Posing for First Bank Ad

Jason Whitney Posing for First Bank Ad

On a radio talk show this morning (WHON) Jason Whitney discussed his decision to sell Joe’s Pizza and move on to other ventures.

After many great years of food and fun at Joe’s this is a sad day for many.  Jason has been a help to the community in several ways during his time at Joe’s Pizza which he purchased in December 2004, later opening a branch of Joe’s Pizza at I.U. East in 2007.

Numerous non-profits have received gift certificates for their fundraisers, parties for children have been a common sight at the pizzeria, and many other people have been given jobs and support from Jason.  He has helped to organize community events such as the Farmer’s market at the Depot as well.

Jason has also served on the Planning Commission of the City of Richmond during his time with Joe’s Pizza.  And he has supported groups such as the Boys and Girls Club of Wayne County, Richmond Urban Enterprise Association, Indiana Historic Landmark Foundation and several others.

The hope is that he continues in this same spirit to influence our community.  Stay tuned to see where Jason goes from here.  He will be an asset to any endeavor that promotes Wayne County.  During his radio interview he shared some ideas for making Richmond better.  On his wish list he added lowering the littering as well as unwanted Graffitti ( he added that the latter was being taken care of for the most part).

Thank you Jason for all you have done to bring joy to the lives of many, as well as your down to earth ideas for making our community a better place.  We at GoWayneCounty.com appreciate your service.

Live Music, Good Food & Shops In The Depot District, Richmond IN

Holidays In The Depot District

In the past when we ran through the checklist of locally owned restaurants that are open in the evening, we used to be frustrated with the few choices.

But last week we had three great experiences in the Depot District in Richmond.  Earlier in the week we went to our old favorite, Joe’s Pizza, to have the pizza and salad buffet.  The pizza is always fresh with a large variety on the bar (my favorites are the spinach and vegetable pizzas).  They also carry specialty pizzas and sandwiches that you can order separate from the bar.  We have enjoyed Friday nights there listening to pianist Carol Lou and friends, playing old time favorites.

After our meal at Joe’s we walked down to Parker’s General Store (Mitrione’s) and picked out some yummy desserts and also got some Christmas shopping done.  Besides adding hot foods and a salad bar along with a new soda pop fountain with sodas, sundaes and other yummy treats, they also carry unique gift and food items.  If you are in the market for old fashioned toys or special wines, they carry those and much more.

And on Friday night we went back to the Depot District to eat at Little Sheba’s, one of three restaurants in the Depot District open in the evenings.  I enjoyed a veggie burger on flat bread and later we shared a slice of cheesecake.  While we ate we listened to the live music of Randy Baker, his son Brian on guitar and professional bass guitar player Bill.    Owner of Little Sheba’s, Steve Terzini, said that they incorporate live music on weekends and that Baker and friends are a regular there at least once a month. (see video below)

Shops open later for the holiday season…

Not only are there great places to eat, but there are shops open later for the holiday season.  Across the street from Little Sheba’s you will find Richmond Furniture Gallery open and ready for business.  Right next to Sheba’s is The Good Life Emporium has natural cotton t-shirts, jackets, mugs and more.  One idea is to go early to shop at stores, like the Railroad Store and antique shops, that close at 6:00 and then have dinner after.

In the video below you can see and hear Randy Baker and friends.  (Little Sheba’s was packed last Friday so you will also hear the background noise of people having a great time).  Enjoy the video and remember the next time you are looking for a great food experience in the evening–check out one of the restaurants at the Depot District in Richmond IN.

Old Fashioned Christmas Festival At Depot Starts Tuesday, Nov 30th

Christmas Train Inside Furniture Gallery

Christmas Train Inside Furniture Gallery

Make sure to come and enjoy carriage rides, lights, carolers, and train rides inside the Richmond Furniture Gallery, and the biggest model train display around– and much much more! All shops will be open later in the evening for buying local and supporting local businesses.  The Festival is from 5 – 9 p.m.

Stop off at Joe’s Pizza for a slice of pizza and salad, Mitriones and Parker’s Old Fashioned General store will be open and offers unique foods and gifts–and a visit from the Grinch.  Little Sheba’s will also be open with yummy foods and desserts to offer.

For More Holiday Gift Ideas…

stop at the Good Life Emporium for natural cotton shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, bags and more.  Also the Railroad Store on the corner will be open late offering handmade crafts & antiques by local vendors-designer clothes and sweater coats by Laurel Whitt–and many other beautiful things.

Carriage Rides At The Depot In Richmond

So much to see and many more shops open including Foster’s Antiques, one of the oldest family owned antique stores in Wayne County.  Also stop in at Terz for designer t-shirts by artist Jon Terzini.   Live deer will be outdoors and Santa will be inside for pictures with children–something for everyone to enjoy.

Watch the video of this event at GoWayneCounty.com.  You won’t want to miss this opportunity to usher in the holiday season.  This is the first Tuesday of the festival, and run each Tuesday through December 21st 2010.

And The Winner Is….

The Depot Mural at Joe's Pizza, Richmond

The Depot Mural at Joe's Pizza, Richmond

The Depot Mural, located at Joe’s Pizza, wins first prize in the Festival of Murals Contest, painted by Diane Toschlog.  The top three winners were announced today at the Starr Gennett Music Festival.

Second Place went to the Firehouse located on the soon to be Firehouse Barbeque and Blues in the Depot District.  And Third prize went to “Lonnie Johnson” on the wall of Pete’s Corner Cafe.

A crowd gathered at 4:30 in the Gorge, after listening to musical performances like Jenny Devoe who was sensational, to be the first to hear the news.

Firehouse Mural, Depot District

Voting took place around Wayne County for the favorite mural, which was a hard contest as they all were spectacular.  The first place mural was also the largest and most time consuming requiring several volunteers to complete as well as many days dedicated to the project by Diane.

Pamela Bliss, director of Festival of Murals also painted murals including Single G in Cambridge City.  As director her art was not eligible for the contest, but many thanks to her for all her hard work and bringing such beautiful art and artists to Wayne County.  Our county is better for the beauty and artistry they have bestowed upon us.  We can hardly wait for next year!
