Dancers From The Next Step Entertain Residents Of Friends Fellowship

Several excited girls gathered at the Next Step Studio to go over their past recital numbers to share with residents of Friends Fellowship on Saturday, July 21, 2012.

Many weeks had passed since the girls had performed in their recitals, but the steps came back to them and they and their teachers, Laura and Michelle, were all happy they could remember.

Taking a break from summer activities, the dancers donned their costumes, headed to the studio to practice and then on to Friends Fellowship.  The residents were awaiting their arrival, many with smiles on their faces as the girls came into the community room.

Laura Hinkley, dance instructor at The Next Step, introduced the dancers as a group and later each girl individually as they finished their numbers.  At the end of the program the dancers had a surprise for the residents.  They had colored pictures and distributed them to the audience as they chatted with them.

There were many happy faces, young and a bit older, as the girls filed out of the Community Room of Friends Fellowship and were on their way to their next adventure of the day.  (To see more pictures of Next Step visits Friends Fellowship, go to our Facebook site: GoWayneCounty).

Disability Awareness Month Events

The month of March celebrates Disability Awareness, and in honor of people with disabilities and those who support them there are several events planned in Wayne County.

On March 16, 2011, Dr. Laura Windsor will speak on new options for people with low vision at Friends Fellowship Community from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.  This is open to the public at no cost.  As technology grows in the field of low vision, there are many amazing new products to help people become independent again—by reading books, taking care of their paperwork and for some the ability to drive.  The Independent Living Center and Friends Fellowship are sponsoring the event.

On March 16, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, the Senior Center will host the Richmond Eye Center which will be offering free vision screening.  This event is open to the public.

There will be many other events scheduled throughout the community, such as Disability Awareness on March 30th at I.U. East, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Check the GoWayneCounty.com calendar which is updated regularly with new events each week.  If you have an event in celebration of D.A.M., please submit it to the calendar. (Under 18 must be accompanied by and adult).  Entry is free, however donations will be accepted.

If you would like to help sponsor the first annual Dream Keepers Dance, you can call 765-939-9226.  Monetary donations as well as prizes and food would all be welcomed.
