McBride Stadium Final Game, GWC

It was a great night at McBride stadium as RiverRats fans watched their team win their final game at home.

The stadium filled with cheers (and bells provided by the Salvation Army) each time the team scored or the other team struck out.  It was a perfect night for baseball with clear skies, a slight cool breeze and families and friends enjoying the game.

Rivie sporting pink bra in support of Breast Cancer Research…

Rivvie the RiverRat sported a lovely pink bra with a nice polka dot bow in support of Breast Cancer Research.  One lucky fan won a basket of goodies from the raffle held by the breast cancer awareness table.

Children were involved in activities in the field in including musical chairs and a quick round of water balloon toss.  One fan got really excited about winning, leaping into the air (see picture below).  They also received several giveaways from sponsors including baseballs, pizza coupons, stress balls, balloons and more.

Fans cheered the victorious winners of last night’s game and the team proudly marched off to the dugout.  Host families were honored again this year for providing a home to one of the players, at the end of the game.

Everyone anticipated the fireworks display which was sponsored by Reid Hospital, and well they should have as they turned out to be spectacular.  All in all a great evening.  Season tickets are available for next year.  Thanks to our own RiverRats team for a great year!

Relay For Life Wayne County Moves Many As The Evening Ends In Fireworks

Many were moved throughout the day yesterday- moved to laughter and tears.  As volunteers from many businesses and organizations walked the track in the hot sun, children played games and got their faces painted.  People gathered and shared memories of loved ones, and experiences of surviving the disease we all decided we hate- cancer.

The video below of fireworks with a live Christian band in the background, was a particularly poignant way to end the day–a celebration of the lives of many who still fight to find a cure and the ones who have gone on after a long battle.  For more pictures of Relay For Life you can visit our Facebook site at Go Wayne County.

Interesting Fireworks 5k Run at Glen Miller Park

dire skates take the Fireworks 5k

The Dire Skates

This morning marked a turning point for 5k runs across America.  No longer will runners enjoy the beauty and peace of running through Glen Miller Park without looking over their shoulders.

The fear in the air was palpable and was plain to see on the runners’ faces as they passed by an unnaturally tall, motley crew of women on skates.  Women who fully intended to chase the runners through the park as they tried to keep their minds on the race.

Illegal Performance Enhancing Running Shoes

Yes, The Dire Skates, who seem to be everywhere in Wayne County at once, have infiltrated the once sacred world of competition running.  True to form, they broke the rules by skating the 5k in non-regulation running gear.  I’m not even sure they knew this was a 5k race and not a derby.  The runners appeared to be worried about that as well.

Dave Snow from G 101.3 was on hand to organize the event and try to keep it peaceful with a minimal amount of carnage.  I could see on his face that he was concerned about his decision to let the Dire Skates in on the race.  As the race drew near, it seemed more and more likely that things could go wrong.  Very wrong.

Juxtaposed against moms pushing baby carriages and hyper-fit runners for whom a 5k is a morning snack, the Dire Skates with their coach (Dredd) seemed delightfully out of place.

No one from the race has reported any mischief to the RPD, though the race is still going on as I write this.
