The home is presently being restored by the owners Gail Martin and Mark Redman but will not be open to the public at this time.

Julian, will be present to plant the Indiana state Tulip tree in honor and memory of Mr. Julian.  Mrs. Browning resides in Chadron, Nebraska.  Several other members of the Julian family from around the country are expected to attend the ceremony.

Jacob Julian, a well known attorney and statesman, served in the Indiana House of Representatives in 1846.  He built the present home in 1857.  When the Wayne County Court House was moved toRichmond in 1873, he and his brother George W. Julian, congressman from Centerville, moved toIrvington, IN.   Jacob Julian, along with Sylvester Johnson, founded the town of Irvington, five miles east of downtown Indianapolis.

Mr. Julian also built the historic Oliver P. Morton home on West Main Street in Centerville in 1848.  The Julians are buried in Centerville’s Crown Hill Cemetery.

Schools Close For a Third Day In Wayne County…As Ice And Snow Leave a Mess

As of 9:00 p.m. tonight just about every school in Wayne County had announced they were closing tomorrow.

Western Wayne Schools and Centerville Abington were two of the first, followed closely by Nettlecreek schools in Hagerstown and Richmond Community Schools (who listed their closings on the website).  Galileo Charter school and Richmond Friends School also listed closings.

After two days of ice, a snowy/ice mix and power outages all over rural Wayne County, some may be a bit tired of the winter wonderland.  And though I don’t like driving in this mess…I do still love the beauty of a snowy day.  The video below was taken today as the snow fell in our yard.  Be careful out there, drive safely and stay warm.

EXCITING NEWS . . .

Wayne County is to be spotlighted as an Indiana getaway spot for the holidays.

How It Happened:

Amy Vaughn, State Tourism Director, pitched Sherman Burdette, reporter from Indy Fox 59 morning show several ideas for a ”Hoosier Holiday” series.  After Sherman heard about what our Wayne County area offers, he immediately said “lets do Wayne County.” He also selected Bloomington and Brown County.

Sherman and his cameraman BJ were hosted by the Tourism Bureau on October 20th, 2010. They visited Ghyslain, in Richmond, Warm Glow Candle Outlet, Lantz House Inn,  and Scott Shafer Pottery all in Centerville. Both gentlemen were impressed! The segment will focus on a getaway for the holidays within a short drive from Indy highlighting handmade Indiana gifts, local dining pleasures and an overnight stay . . . all without breaking the budget.

The segment will air Friday, November 12, 2010 between 5-9 a.m.  As with the Fox 59 coverage of the Fur Ball and HELP Calendar—if a video clip is made available we will run it on GoWayneCounty.com.  Check in after November 12 if you miss the live tape.

A Peaceful Presence: The Amish In Wayne County

amish cheese shop

On a road trip through Wayne County collecting pictures and information for the first print edition of GoWayneCounty, I was reminded of the peaceful and picturesque presence of the Amish community.

Northern Wayne County is home to a newer Amish settlement.  The Amish are usually settled in areas of the country such as Pennsylvania and Ohio. Their ancestors came to America from Germany and we are pleased to have such an industrious people in our community.

Amish are a simple people who live mostly off the land as farmers but also produce beautiful furniture and other handcrafted items.

Amish Cheese Shop Deli and Bakery

One reminder of their presence is the Amish Cheese Shop that we passed on our way to Hagerstown.  A bright yellow and cheery building, it houses my daughter’s favorite form of sustenance, and has been in business on State Rd 1 since 1983.   So on our way back to Centerville we stocked up on our cheese needs as well as some jelly and pastry.

As we approached the cheese shop we passed a black buggy pulling a young Amish man.  Though I was tempted to take a picture I remembered that predominantly the Amish do not like their pictures taken.  (Plus I was driving which did not seem a wise time to take a picture).

We have great respect for the hard work of living a “simple” life

In our family we have secretly and at times openly envied the simple lives of the Amish people.  We have great respect for the hard work of living a “simple” life which includes dawn to dusk labor—a workload that is beyond most of our energy levels.

Yet the idea of no phones, cell phones, television, Ipods, Facebook, answering machines, etc sometimes seems like a good one as we all become more attached to the genres of interfacing.

In addition, if you have not eaten an angel food cake made in an Amish kitchen—you have not yet lived.  We welcome the quiet presence of the Amish community here in Wayne County and the abilities and tasty foods they share with all of us.

A recent video which was intended to be a comical and ironic piece about young Amish men on roller blades may have not been taken lightly by some as it was intended.

We at GoWayneCounty.com who are comprised of family and members of this county have nothing but respect and, as I mentioned, a bit of envy for the Amish community.  In our own ways we share a love for the earth and bounty it produces as do the Amish.

We attempt gardening and producing foods for our own tables each summer.  Admittedly we are not experts, but we love watching things grow.  Maybe that is why we are so dedicated to GoWayneCounty.com—we want to be a tool for Wayne County so it can grow and prosper.  We want to be around for the harvest time.

Open Mic Night @ E Street Pub

So I went back down to E Street Thursday night for my live music fix and got just what the doctor ordered. This show just keeps getting better and better. Thursday night offered just about every genre of music out there. From classic to indie rock and a little r&b/hip-hop, there was music to wet anyone’s appetite. And not to mention enough drinks to quench anyone’s thirst. And I do get thirsty at times.

Anyway, I had a great time seeing all the musicians and the people that come out to support them. It’s a great group of friends to have.

These guys really wow me every week. I always come away hearing something new or a new version of something old. They really know what they are doing. It’s some mighty fine a-picking and a-playing.

Also there’s something newer that I want to talk about this week, well it’s newer to me, and it was a definite treat to see. Trey Rogers, Tyray Logan, and Rob Abrams put on the end of the night show. Trey, on the keys, serves up smooth grooves as he twinkles the ivories and sings. Tyray provides styling vocals and hits them notes just right. And Rob bangs out the solid beat percussion that provides the back bone. Their instant hit original Easy Street, dubbed for the E Street Pub, is a definite crowd-pleaser.

So come one, come all, jump in, the water’s just fine (I think that’s enough cliches for one article) and catch a great show put on by local musicians and The E Street Pub.
