The Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County annual Christmas Shop will start today and run through Thursday.  We anticipate over 500 local youth will participate and be able to shop for gifts for their families this holiday season.

Over 250 volunteers from the community will help youth shop with a personal shopper to pick out gifts, box the items and wrap the items this week.  More than 25,000 gifts have been donated all year-long by individuals and local businesses.

New co-chairs for the event Tye Hill, Jane Rosa and Aileen Githens have taken over the event this year from long time chair Carla Stidham.  Stidham remains very active in helping to make this event a huge success.

We collaborate with Girls Inc. and Townsend center to serve their youth members as well members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County.

This is a great photo opportunity.

This past weekend at Day for Kids in the 10th street park, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County Keystone Club were able to give away over 10,000 pounds of food to 252 families.  In doing this, we were able to provide food for 926 individuals. This is the biggest community service project that the Keystone Club has done so far.   A special thank you to Gleaners Food Bank who partnered with the Club on this outstanding community program.

The Keystone Club is a chartered small-group (8 to 15  members) leadership development club for young people ages 14 –18.  Keystoners elect officers, choose their own activities, and plan and implement community/club service projects under the direction of an adult advisor over 23 years old.

A national charter entitles a Keystone Club to participate in regional and national Keystone conferences.  The Keystone Club is the leader and fuel behind the Club’s teen programs.  Their service to the community and Club help build vital leadership and character skills.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF WAYNE COUNTY IMPLEMENTS NEW NATIONAL PROGRAM AIMED TO INSPIRE KIDS TO BE GREAT AND GRADUATE

Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County can make a difference.  In many cases, Boys & Girls Clubs have become the last best hope for children and families in the communities that we serve by helping young people build supportive relationships with trusted caring adults, and form positive relationships with their peers.

In a recent Harris Interactive survey, 28 percent of Boys & Girls Club alumni surveyed reported that if not for the Club, they would not have graduated from high school, and 62 percent credit the Club with increasing their commitment to education. The Boys & Girls Club’s mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. This program is a critical tool to help fulfill that mission.
