Blast At The Overpass Fun For All

At the beer garden

It was a diverse crowd of young and old with various tastes in music that attended the 4th Annual Blast at the Overpass last night.  And all the musical desires were met with the lineup of musicians.

The opening act, Chris Parker performed his own music on guitar and vocals in a “Dave Matthews-esque” style as someone described him as they enjoyed his set.  Sitting in the shade with a cool breeze blowing in the beer garden, his music was relaxing and upbeat–perfect for the general feeling of the night.

Crowd at Blast at the Overpass

4th Floor Blues servers were mingling with the crowd bringing refreshments, most notably beer  from the new Boswell Brewery just around the corner in the Depot District.  On the other side of the beer garden were the picnic type food items provided by Mitrione’s including Italian sausages, hot dogs, burgers, and potato salad along with non-alcoholic beverages.

The scents in the beer garden of burgers and sausages on the grill added to the evening that special feel of a large family picnic.

Once the headliner band Randy Baker and Friends hit the stage at around 8:15 p.m. the crowd had grown and were ready to dance.  And dance they did-at least the smaller ones.  The bands rendition of “Sweet Home Chicago” got several on their feet and many heads bobbing and clapping.  Their diverse range of music from country to blues and some oldies thrown in, including 8 Days of the Week, was a big hit with the crowd.

One woman in the crowd, Linda, commented “This is a lovely group of people enjoying themselves.”  She added that she “loves watching the kids dance and play.”  She spoke for many of the people who attended last night.

Tom Broyles co-owner of the new Firehouse BBQ and Blues Club was enjoying himself with his wife and son relaxing after hours of building and remodeling at Richmond’s  oldest firehouse.  The new establishment in the Depot District, located at 400 & 402 N 8th Street, is scheduled to open in September 2010 with great anticipation from the community.

Overall it was a wonderful event for the community and once again thanks must go out to Rick Parker and 4th Floor Blues for sponsoring the event as well as Warm Glow Candles and the InConcert series for bringing such great performers to the festivities. We look forward to the next In Concert performance.
