Madilyn (left) and Molly (right) Coomes with "Chloe" and "Chunky Chip", their entries in the Mini-Rex category of the Rabbit Show.

One would think that entering a single event at the 4H fair would be hard enough, but for the Coomes sisters, that is definitely not true.  Madilyn and Molly Coomes of Centerville certainly have their hands full during this year’s 4H Fair at the Wayne County Fairgrounds.  Their entries include rabbits, horses, pigs, sheep, foods, and macrame.

Each of the sisters participate separately, with their own individual entries.  Madilyn, 13, has been doing this for three years.  Her younger sister, Molly, 10,  joined the 4H Shows two years ago.  “Working with the animals is my favorite part of the process”,  explained Madilyn.  While Molly’s favorite part is getting to show the animals.

GWC will follow up with the Coomes sisters to see how the shows this week turned out for them.  Stay tuned….

To find out when the girls will be showing again, see the complete fair schedule.

Savannah Jack and Tractor Pulls at 4H Fair

IMG_2802

At the 4h Fair this evening, I had to choose between the tractor pull and a great band, Savannah Jack.  I couldn’t choose so I hit them both.

Great music and they were all pretty funny too.  The band is really taking off.  They’ve just recorded the first 3 episodes of their own TV show, a new album, and have done numerous concerts with Kenny Rogers and several other country greats.  You can find out more on the Savannah Jack website.

Recommendation:  Ear plugs or don’t stand this close to the starting line…

I found out first hand the reason you can hear these things from anywhere in Richmond, and probably a good chunk of Wayne County.

Entrants Prepare Sheep for Show Today

Allison Belork with "Bob" preparing for the show today

The 4H Sheep Show is starting right now at the Wayne County Fairgrounds.   Earlier today, the place was buzzing with everyone getting ready for the 4:00 show.  Allsion Belork of Cambridge City (see photo at right) was shearing her 121-pound Suffolk sheep named “Bob.”  This is Allison’s 9th year participating in the 4H fair, and each year she has a sheep named Bob as well as an entrant in the cattle show.

Zack Olsen, 11, of Milton (see photo below) has been competing in the Sheep Show since 2007.   As a group from the Boys and Girls Club approach to watch (bottom right) he graciously stops his washing and allows them to come closer to pet his sheep, “Big Toe.”

The animals available to pet and feed  include a Tibetan Yak, a miniature buffalo named Bill, a pot belly pig, a miniature horse, a llama, a camel, pygmy goats, Nigerian goats (including twin dwarfs), and a miniature donkey!  Also available are pony rides for $5.00.

It’s family fun for everyone, so come out and meet these wonderful animals in person!

Go Wayne County Is At The Fair…Are You?

We have just set up our canopy and we’ll be here all week!

Behind us we can hear (and see) the roller coasters and rides, the K9 crew, and music.  In front of us is a car show and to our left the horse ring where just a few minutes ago riders and horses were circling with flags.

We just sampled giant onion rings and a steak burger which were both yummy and have our eyes on funnel cake and other goodies.  A parade of tractors came by as we rode the carousel.  What fun!

The rides just opened today so come on out to the Fair.   And stop by our table to say hello.  We are giving away free business directory listings if you bring by your card for your business.

See you at the 4H Fair!

The Animal Shows Have Begun at the 4H Fair

Despite the rain earlier today,  there was a good turnout for the scheduled shows this morning and afternoon.

Nothing could curb the enthusiasm of the participants and spectators of the Swine Show.   Joey Carr, 13, of Richmond explained, “The best part of this is having fun with the animals.”

Carr has been entering his pigs and sheep for 5 years now and his younger siblings plan
to follow their big brother’s legacy.   “They’ll do anything for marshmallows!”, said
Carr as he talked about the process of training his pig for this year’s  show.

Tomorrow, the Raper Center will hold the Rabbit Show at 9 a.m., followed by the
Goat Show at 1 p.m.   Check back on GoWayneCounty.com daily for more on the
2011 4H Fair!
