Last night spectators arrived early for the opening night of the Richmond RiverRats game.  Even with an imminent storm approaching, a decent crowd gathered for this special night.

The home team played a great game as clouds rolled in and ultimately lightning at the bottom of the 6th inning.  The RiverRats were ahead 5-1 over their rivals, Lorain County, when the game was put into a 15 minute delay to watch the weather.

In the mean time the decision was made to go ahead with fireworks as the team covered the field with tarp.  So with a cool breeze blowing into the stadium after a steamy night, the first fireworks show of the season commenced.  As you will see from the video below – it was quite a display which was reportedly sponsored by Reid Hospital.

You will find more pictures of opening night at our Go Wayne County Facebook site.  To follow the schedule for the season you can visit the RichmondRiverRats.com website, and it is also linked to the GWC site.  If you can’t make a game, you can listen to them live from GoWayneCounty.com.

Earlham College Cross Country Earns National Recognition

Press Release Submitted by Earlham College

David Naegeli

RICHMOND, Ind. (February 2011)— The Earlham College cross country program earned national recognition on Friday as both teams along with Jacob Naegeli were honored by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The Earlham men’s team had the top GPA out of the 125 Div. III schools on the list with a 3.58. This is the second time the men’s program has produced the highest GPA having achieved the honor in 2001. The Earlham women’s team was among a group of 167 with a 3.49 GPA.

“I am pleased our women and men’s cross country teams have reached such a high level of success in the classroom,” Earlham Head Coach Pat Thomas said. “That our men’s team has the top cumulative GPA among the nation’s Division III cross country teams is indeed a special honor.”

A team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.10 or better and have compiled a score (finished at least five runners) at their respective NCAA regional championship.

Naegeli (Trout Creek, MT, Thompson Falls) was one of 142 competitors named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team.

“We also are quite proud of Jacob’s ability to combine his excellence as a runner with that in the classroom,” Thomas said.

Naegeli earned all-region honors last fall in the NCAA Div. III Great Lakes Regional at Hope College. In the 8K race, he had a time of 25:54.5 to finish in 28th place.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most-recent semester and placed in the top 35 at the NCAA Regional Championships.
