Lots of places host regular Karaoke nights throughout Wayne County.  But Tally Ho Pub is hosting a 6 week competition dubbed “Tally Idol” which is drawing standing-room-only crowds.

The event is hosted by Tally Ho Pub, every Wednesday through November 10th from 9pm-1am. The contest includes 3 judges who score the contestants and advance 3 singers each week.

Joshua Jones (Jonesey) runs the show and keeps the crowd moving.  Regular Karaoke follows the contest every week, running into the wee hours.

Last week there wasn’t an empty seat in the house.  The atmosphere is friendly and, at times, electric during performances by some very talented local singers.  This week will see a creepy Halloween theme and a $100 door prize from JC Penny’s Salon.

Robbing Zombie

E Street Pub was wall-to-wall with headbangers on Saturday night for the Robbing Zombie tribute band.

These guys were “dead” on, just as advertised, and they gave Zombie fans a taste of Halloween early this year.

Can’t wait to see them again next year, or sooner! Go Wayne County and Dragon’s Den Tattooing were proud sponsors of this event.

A very big THANK YOU to all who attended the Bicentennial Bash last night at E Street Pub!

We gave away some cool prizes with the help of the following supporters:

Here are a few pics.  We’ll be adding more and, hopefully, they aren’t quite as grainy and dark as these lol.

Finally, thank you so much to all the bands who played close to 7 hours of great music!  You donated your time and we love you for it!

Hosts Brian Elstro and Megan Eversole

Hello All.  After my brief hiatus it was really great to see you out again at the E Street Pub.  The music has only gotten better and better.  We really need more shows like this one around town.

The show last night was hosted by one of the most talented people I know Megan Eversole, and co-hosted by none other than Mr. Grumbles himself the awesome drummer Brian Elstro.  And there were so many great musicians; just like always.  I feel like writing about this event can and may have become redundant, but until you come down and see it for yourself.. and yes I’m talking to you.. you will listen (i.e. read) to every single word I have to say (i.e. type).  I kid, I kid.  But seriously do yourself a favor and come down and join us next Thursday night at E Street.  It’s a friendly environment and no one will force you to drink if you don’t wanna.  Just come see what amazing musicians Richmond has to offer.

Recap of G101.3 Battle of Bands

We had a great time watching the bands compete this past weekend at the Elks Country Club. There was quite a turn out of all ages. The bands really gave it their all and we all came out winners of this event.

Great concessions and bands promoting their gear. Some of the bands, Lipstick in particular, gave out tickets to upcoming events and other shows. I believe Shannon Scott, Lipstick’s drummer, gave out a drumstick or two.

Local businesses were there promoting their venues and offering coupons. It was a good family outing with some great live music!

Bands Lipstick and Torso Down will both be headlining Freedom Jam during the 4th of July weekend.

Local Benefit: Crossin’ The Line for Education

Crossin' The Line for Education

Recently I had a chance to speak with Stacie Foust, one of the coordinators behind a new event called Crossin’ The Line for Education being put on at The E Street Pub, and found out more about a charitable event that can provide a whole lot of good for our community and surrounding areas.

1. GoWayneCounty: So what is Crossin’ The Line For Education all about?

Foust: The E Street Pub Crossin’ the Line for Education is a benefit for an education based non-profit. Owner Phil Morgan, Brad Bales and I have talked about the possibility of having more of these in the future. Each time, the money would go to a different education focused group in Wayne or Preble County. The whole idea is that these two counties cross lines all the time to work together. Morgan is a true supporter of education, local artists and area growth. They have been more than generous and worked hard to organize this event. And of course all of the musical guests should be recognized for volunteering their skills.

2. GoWayneCounty: What/Where do the proceeds go to?

Foust: For this event, the proceeds will go to Preble Promise. Preble Promise is non-profit in Preble County that works “to make post-secondary education accessible and achievable.” We work with traditional and non-traditional students. Basically anyone who wants to launch a new start can begin with us. Interns and volunteers have piloted during-school academic tutoring programs, created financial aid workshops, college planning booklets, and worked with students focusing on achievement gaps. We work with area universities and local schools, attempting to foster a service relationship where college students gain experience and those who need help get it. We know the process can be daunting and our mission is to make it easier, to compliment the services public schools offer and assist them. We hope to see continued growth and support.

3. GoWayneCounty: When is the event and how much for admittance?

Foust: Saturday May 1st, 2010 at The E Street Pub…Kicks off at 6:00 p.m. Cost is 5$ at the door. There will be door prizes and raffle.

Crossin' The Line for Education

So come out and support local education and your community with us at The E Street Pub.

Open Mic Night @ E Street Pub

So I went back down to E Street Thursday night for my live music fix and got just what the doctor ordered. This show just keeps getting better and better. Thursday night offered just about every genre of music out there. From classic to indie rock and a little r&b/hip-hop, there was music to wet anyone’s appetite. And not to mention enough drinks to quench anyone’s thirst. And I do get thirsty at times.

Anyway, I had a great time seeing all the musicians and the people that come out to support them. It’s a great group of friends to have.

These guys really wow me every week. I always come away hearing something new or a new version of something old. They really know what they are doing. It’s some mighty fine a-picking and a-playing.

Also there’s something newer that I want to talk about this week, well it’s newer to me, and it was a definite treat to see. Trey Rogers, Tyray Logan, and Rob Abrams put on the end of the night show. Trey, on the keys, serves up smooth grooves as he twinkles the ivories and sings. Tyray provides styling vocals and hits them notes just right. And Rob bangs out the solid beat percussion that provides the back bone. Their instant hit original Easy Street, dubbed for the E Street Pub, is a definite crowd-pleaser.

So come one, come all, jump in, the water’s just fine (I think that’s enough cliches for one article) and catch a great show put on by local musicians and The E Street Pub.

Lipstick rocks The Wheel

I wanna Rock! And that’s exactly what Lipstick did for us at The Wheel this past Saturday night. Lipstick is an exciting and very entertaining 80’s cover rock band. They put on a heck of a show. The members of the band go all out, wearing costumes, their showmanship, and even 80’s style stage names. They really go that extra mile to make their show something special and stand out from the rest.

Lipstick and The Wheel really provided a great vibe Saturday night. I had a great time and the crowd was really digging it too. People were dancing, laughing and really get into the spirit and groove of things. With Lipstick’s guitar ripping riffs, big beat banging drums and solid backbone bass lines it’s hard not to get into the groove. These guys played all the hits. I just want to give a big thanks to Lipstick and The Wheel for providing such a great Saturday night!

Great Thursday @ E Street Pub

Well, another Thursday Night at E Street Pub.  And where were you?  Uh-huh, sure.  If you weren’t there you missed one heck of a time.  And if you were there, cheers for you mate.

The E Street Pub had another great line up, under the supervision of Mr. Brian Wells, our gracious host, and all those who participated.  It’s really great to see these musicians, week in and week out, giving us great performances.  These guys are really starting to bring in the crowds.  Hopefully there’s a little help from us too, here at Go Wayne County.  Because that’s what we’re all about.  That’s why we’re doing this.  We want to see more and more people supporting local live music and our community.  And Thursday night people came out in force.  It was awesome to see so many people already there even before the music started.  And you just kept coming in.  I know the E Street Pub loves seeing this kind of turn out.  This free event started with very little people involved and hardly any publicity and has turned into something really great.  We at GWC just want to watch it continue to grow and inspire.

At the bottom of the page is a slide show of some of the great performers we had entertaining us Thursday night.  Unfortunately the video that was taken that night did not come out, but I added a song to the slide show, that was also played Thursday night, and really defined the vibe of the evening.

Here’s a clip of that moment:

Well until next Thursday keep on keeping on.  Hope to see you at the next show.

Tuesday Night Jams @ Mack’s Place

Come check out local musicians Doug Wright and Bryan Baker as they play an acoustic jam session every Tuesday night from 8-12pm at Mack’s Place here in Richmond, IN.  I guess I should say Doug Wright, Bryan Baker and Co. since every now and then you get a couple different performers stopping by.  Which is nice, keeps the show fresh.  You’ll hear everything from Classic Rock, New Rock, a little Country and maybe something a little off the wall that you might not have expected.

It’s a lot of fun; the bartenders are friendly and the drinks are cheap.  Mack’s has a real personal charm about it too.  Not the biggest bar in Wayne County, but some of the biggest fun you can have.  They offer all sorts of activities for entertainment, plus the best jukebox in town… at least in my opinion.

Tuesday night at Mack’s always puts me in the mood for a good little party.  So come on down to Mack’s Place have a drink and have some fun.

Review of This Week’s Open Mic Night at E Street Pub

esp

I think people are really catching onto Thursday nights. Thursday’s like the new Saturday, or something. And it’s all because Thursday’s are Open Mic Nights down at the E Street Pub right here in the historic depot area of Richmond, Indiana. Now we’re not talking about your typical coffee house, elevator music open mic, we’re talking about some very talented musicians rolling through here and putting on a kick-butt show.

And there’s no cover charge. Free great live music. And there’s always such a great variety. I’m always stoked when I hear something I haven’t heard before. Or somebody just gets up there and blows you away with his or her original song or their version of another song. Just like our host last night, Brian Dannaker, and his awesome version of Ozzy’s “Crazy Train“. Now that one will definitely put a smile on your face.

We had a couple of guys that I personally had never seen play down here before, Jay Johnson and Carl Rader, and they were absolutely phenomenal. These guys could really pick out a song. I’ve posted a video of them at the bottom of this article. Do yourself a favor and check it out. I was thoroughly impressed and I believe the crowd was too.

Which is another thing; there was a heck of a crowd there last night. People are really coming out to see this great show. But I digress, Jay and Carl really put on a great show. There music was great, but they also gave stage presence which sometimes can be missing from even a great show. From playing with beer bottle slides and getting the crowd involved it certainly was a treat.

Another treat that we veteran residents of this bar got last night was the return of Joe Augustine. Joe has always been a great entertainer and has been playing in this place for many years. He played some great music for us last night, like his original “Dancing in the Corn” and his awesome rendition of “Kiss from a Rose” which doesn’t sound anything like the Seal song. Actually his Dancing in the Corn song has been stuck in my head all day. It’s a great song, you got to hear it. Maybe I’ll be able to snag a recording of it one of these days and get it on here. Anyway, there’s a picture of Joe at the top of this article belting out a tune for us.

So next Thursday come on out and join me, and the awesome crowd, for another great and FREE! Show (also cheap drinks!) brought to you by the E Street Pub. If you are a musician and would like to play we’d love to hear you. The music usually starts around 10 pm. Come early and sign up with our hosts. See ya there!

Punk Night @ E Street Pub

E Street Pub

E Street PubSaturday night was the punk show at E Street Pub.  Now I have to be honest with you, cause if I wasn’t what would this be worth to you… or me for that matter.  Anyway Punk music isn’t my normal cup of tea, but I thoroughly enjoyed what I was hearing last night.  It was a 3 band lineup featuring Safety-Pin, The Misunderstood and Chamomile.

Safety-Pin rocked the crowd with a hour’s worth of fairly well known punk song covers.  “This is not your token Blink 182 punk”, to quote the leader singer of Safety-Pin Brian Wells.  He is most definitely right.  With rockin’ beats from the Ramones to Depehce Mode the crowd and I were certainly entertained.

Up next was The Misunderstood with a female lead vocalist slash guitarist that also treated us to her drumming skills on one song.  I enjoyed the upbeat fast sounds that they played on some of their original songs.  They really got the crowd up and moving.

Some folks drove hours to support their favorite musicians.  Chamomile, the final band, is from Bloomington, Indiana.  Two brothers make up the band.  One guitar, vocals, and a set of drums.  These guys really rocked.  They had people up on their feet the entire time they played.  Their sound was a little heavier and I think the crowd really enjoyed that.  Heck, I really enjoyed it, and like I said not my normal thing.  It was also kinda cool to see a band made up of just two people up there producing such great sounds.

I’m happy I went and checked out “Punk Night” at E Street Pub.  I have a strong affinity for great music and get satisfaction out of supporting my local live musicians.  Plus, in my opinion, there’s no better place to be when you’re looking for good quality entertainment or just something to do on a Saturday night.  There was a very good vibe in the crowd last night.  It seems to be a recurring theme on live music nights at E Street Pub.  Friends pouring beers for friends.  Ah, you gotta love it.

The Precious Furies – Live at E Street Pub

It seems like every time I go to the E Street Pub I’m discovering some new music, lyrics, or sound that appeals to me.  Last night was no exception.

The Precious Furies were playing.  The smooth grooves and funky backbeats they produce really set it off.  They pour a lot of emotion into their music and you can actually feel it from them.  That’s a rare feat, I’d have to say, in this day and age.  You could really say that about a lot of musicians and bands that roll through here.  These guys are playing music for me and you, and for themselves.  They aren’t trying to win any popularity contest.  They just want to be heard, and I just love to listen.

It really amazes me how much talent we have in our own little section of the world.  Richmond, Indiana or Wayne County for that matter, doesn’t make me think “Great Live Music”, but I would be wrong. In fact I’ve heard better free music here than some of the shows I’ve paid 30 or 40 dollars a pop for.  The variety of music this local venue offers is outstanding.  Thursday nights are open mic nights and you will hear everything from folk, rock, bluegrass (yes, we have pickers) and maybe even a little r&b/ hip hop.

But I digress, If you haven’t made your way down to the E Street Pub I highly recommend that you do and treat yourself to some great live music.  And if you have been here before, well you know where it is and you better get your butt down here.

E Street Pub. It’s like a Live Music Mecca right here in our own little city.

The Precious Furies – One Week

E Street Pub Open Mic Night

So I was playing my djembe down at the former Doc’s last night.  Every week I’m amazed by the talent roaming around Richmond and Wayne County.

We have some serious musicians in Richmond and surrounding areas who like to come to open mics and make people like me feel like I’m in a bigger, more cosmopolitan city.  Not that I’m down on Richmond, but it isn’t normally the first place people think of when they think about good live music.  We talk a lot about the old days and the jazz, but it’s time to shine a bright light on the present music scene in Richmond.

Among the living, we have folk, rock, alternative, and mixtures of many different influences pouring through the speakers in places like E Street Pub.

I want to start highlighting the live music scene here at Go Wayne County so that people can start to understand there’s a lot going on after dark in our humble, not-so-sleepy little town.

Until the next time, I invite you to come out on Thurdays around 10 pm whether you play guitar, sing, drum or blow a horn.  And if you don’t play, your ears await some surprising aural delights and great atmosphere.

What: E Street Pub

Where: 815 North E Street
