Anonymous Donor Creates Fund to Benefit Siloam Clinic

Press Release

Donor Offers Dollar-for-Dollar Match for Other Gifts

The Wayne County Foundation has been approached by an anonymous donor who has set up an endowed fund to benefit the Siloam Clinic in Richmond.   Additionally, this person is offering up to $5,000 more to match other gifts given to the fund between now and the end of the year.

“Access to quality healthcare is critically important,” said Steve Borchers, executive director of the Foundation.  “This is a wonderful gift that will help address that need and – we hope – encourage others to be supportive, too.”

The Siloam Clinic is an outreach ministry of Petra Project of Richmond.  It serves Wayne County residents age 13 and older who have no insurance, Medicaid or Medicare coverage.

Pastor David Eales founded the clinic in 2009 with an all-volunteer team of doctors and nurses.  Currently, there are eight volunteer physicians, more than 15 nurses, and 5 administrative volunteers who staff the clinic every Tuesday evening.  There is no cost to the patients.

“The numbers of people we help speak to the need,” he said.  “We have served more than 600 people so far and have logged in over 1,200 visits. We have also provided more than $5,000 worth of prescriptions to those who cannot purchase what our doctors prescribe.”

The fund, created at the Wayne County Foundation with $5,000 will produce an annual distribution in support of the clinic and its prescription drug program. Raising additional dollars from the community will trigger more money from the anonymous donor.  This will mean the clinic will receive a greater distribution every year.

“Our donor would very much like to see the fund be larger than $5,000 – and even larger than $15,000,” said Borchers.  “We have a real opportunity to make that happen and effectively triple the annual support to the clinic.”

Contributions to the Siloam Clinic Fund should be directed to Wayne County Foundation, 33 South 7th Street, Richmond, or through the Foundation’s online giving option at waynecountyfoundation.org.  You can call the Foundation Office at 765-962-1638 with questions.

“This fund will be very important to the long-term sustainability of the clinic,” said Pastor Eales.  “Because we keep our costs so low, the amount we could receive annually from the fund represents a significant portion of our overall operation.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County annual Christmas Shop will start today and run through Thursday.  We anticipate over 500 local youth will participate and be able to shop for gifts for their families this holiday season.

Over 250 volunteers from the community will help youth shop with a personal shopper to pick out gifts, box the items and wrap the items this week.  More than 25,000 gifts have been donated all year-long by individuals and local businesses.

New co-chairs for the event Tye Hill, Jane Rosa and Aileen Githens have taken over the event this year from long time chair Carla Stidham.  Stidham remains very active in helping to make this event a huge success.

We collaborate with Girls Inc. and Townsend center to serve their youth members as well members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County.

This is a great photo opportunity.

Locally Owned Toy Store Featured In Country Living Magazine

Copy (2) of veach's block party 012

Veach’s, locally owned and operated in Richmond for many decades, is featured in the current edition of Country Living Magazine.

Sitting at my aunt’s table tonight,  it was quite exciting to see the store we grew up with featured in a national magazine which recognized the success and longevity of the toy store, which was once a five and dime when it began in the 30′s.

Shown in the picture highlighted in Country Living Magazine, are the current owner and his granddaughter Baleigh standing amongst the wonderful display of trains available at their store.  There is also mention of John Veach, son, and also manager of the daily operations at Veaches.

Mr Veach demonstrating a toy this summer

Memories of the birthday castle and the changes the store has gone through came flooding back as I read the article touting the achievements of maintaining a locally owned store.

When you are looking for that unique toy  or game for your special child this Christmas remember Veach’s, a now nationally recognized store in our midst, with the same hometown feel that has served us all from our own childhoods to our children’s.

8th Annual Alternative Gift Fair December 3, 2011- A Great Way To Give

The 8th Annual
Alternative Gift Fair

By Stephanie Hayes-Mussoni

Stephanie, Director of the Cope Environmental Center

Are you looking for a wonderful way to give meaningful gifts to all those on your holiday shopping list?  The answer is to attend the Eighth Annual Wayne County Alternative Gift Fair.  The gift fair is an event that is full of “holiday spirit.”  There are treats, music, massages, and a one-stop shopping venue for everyone on your list!

The Alternative Gift Fair began when a group of local women heard of the concept presented by a national organization – The New Dream.  This organization is based on changing our perception of what it is to realize “The American Dream” focusing more on experiences and sustainable lifestyles instead of accumulating “stuff.”  The idea of the Alternative Gift Fair came together to help promote meaningful gifts that not only give to the recipient, but also give back to the community.

This  is a one day event that brings together 18 non–profits.  A shopper attends the fair and selects a variety of “gifts” for people on their lists that match their interests in the community.  Maybe you have someone who loves to hike, you can “purchase” the care of one mile of hiking trails at Cope Environmental Center in their name.  Or for the dog lover a gift of food and shelter for dogs at HELP the Animals.  Each of the 18 organizations has 3 “gifts” at three different donation levels.  The shopper uses one shopping list to purchase as many gifts from as many of the organizations as the shopper chooses.

Gift Fair Will Be At Morrison Reeves Library Again This Year

Then the shopping list is taken to the cashier and one payment is made for all your gifts via cash, check or charge.  The shopper chooses the mode of wrapping and enjoys goodies, music and even a chair massage while awaiting the finished gifts to be presented to friends, family, co-workers, and anyone else on the shopping list!    Partners such as Wayne County Foundation, Reid Hospital & Health Care Services and Summersault are making your dollar stretch by providing matching gifts and/or general support for the event.

As a bonus, the Wayne County Foundation will also be giving $10 “Bonus Bucks” to the first 100 people through the checkout line who are: a new shopper, a child, or someone who donates to five or more organizations.  This coupon can be used to “purchase” an additional donation in honor of someone!  Thanks to WCF for supporting the Fair for so many years. The Alternative Gift Fair is a great way to get into the true holiday season, purchase meaningful gifts, and give back to the community!  Join us on December 3 from 12:00 – 3:00 at Morrison Reeves Library in the Bard Room for all the fun and festivities. More information and a list of participating agencies can be found on the AGF website at: www.MyAlternativeGiftFair.org.

ArtsPower’s Madeline and the Bad Hat, an original musical based upon the much‐loved book, captures the blithe yet touching spirit of Ludwig Bemelmans’s Madeline series. It traces the adventures of a young Parisian girl who – despite staritng off on the wrong foot with a mischievous new neighbor – eventually learns that first impressions aren’t everything.

When one fine day the Spanish Ambassador moves into the house next door, Madeline and Miss Clavel and the other girls quickly discover that his son Pepito is a true horror! Rude and conceited, Pepito seems at first to be nothing but trouble.  But when he unexpectedly finds himself in real danger, it’s up to the resourceful Madeline to get him out of it.

Can she teach Pepito a lesson into the bargain, and does he have a hidden good side after all? This gently amusing tale of enemies‐become‐friends will charm and entertain children and parents alike.

Turtle Island Quartet Comes To Earlham College November 5, 2011

Turtle Island String Quartet

Date: Saturday, November 5, 2011
Time: 7:30 pm
Location: Goddard Auditorium, Carpenter Hall
Tickets needed (see below)

The reimagined music of legends Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane will fill Goddard Auditorium as the Grammy-award winning Turtle Island Quartet takes the stage on Saturday, November 5.

The Artist and Lecture Series event begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are required and cost $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available by calling Earlham’s Office of Events at (765)983-1373.

Turtle Island has created bold trends

Since its 1985 inception, Turtle Island has created bold trends in chamber music for strings. Winner of the 2006 and 2008 Grammy Award for the Best Classical Crossover category, Turtle Island fuses the classical quartet aesthetic with contemporary American musical styles. For the Earlham performance, the Quartet recreates Coltrane’s enduring jazz recordings and Hendrix’s legendary masterpieces.

Quartet founder and violinist David Balakrishnan says he thinks that given the proper conditions, a work of art can transcend both genre and era, and such is the case with Coltrane’s jazz epiphany, A Love Supreme.

In exploring Coltrane’s musical legacy, Turtle Island continues its tradition of employing the string quartet form to shed new light on the timeless joy and beauty of American jazz music. The concert presents an in-depth look at this landmark recording in the greater context of the music that preceded and followed, a time many consider to be the last great evolutionary period of jazz.

Balakrishnan considers Hendrix one of his biggest musical influences

During an interview with National Public Radio, Balakrishnan says that while listening to Electric Ladyland a few years ago he was struck by how Hendrix’s writing for guitar suited the style of string quartets.

“(He) wasn’t playing a bunch of chords the way a guitar player would normally play,” he says in the August 2010 NPR interview. “But with Electric Ladyland, he was really layering melodies, and the way he played the guitar, he could really get that sinuous vibrato that creates this texture and bed of melodic fragments laid on top of each other — perfect for a string quartet like Turtle Island.”

In addition to the Hendrix pieces from Electric Ladyland, Turtle Island has tackled a solo cello rendition of “Little Wing” and a crowd-pleasing, slower, more ballad-like rock treatment of “Hey Joe.”

Turtle Island Quartet original members Balakrishnan and cellist Mark Summer are joined by Danish jazz violinist Mads Tolling and U.S. National Scottish fiddle champion Jeremy Kittel.
Ticket Information

Tickets are required and cost $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. General admission tickets will be available beginning August 15.
