FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

David Dawson, Next Earlham President

RICHMOND, Ind. — Earlham College is pleased to announce that John David Dawson has accepted an offer from the Board of Trustees to become the 17th President of Earlham. Board Chair Deborah Hull ’67 made the announcement earlier today.

David Dawson begins his tenure at Earlham on July 1.
Dawson is currently a Professor of Religion and Constance and Robert MacCrate Professor in Social Responsibility at Haverford College in Haverford, Penna., where he has been a member of the faculty since 1987.
In 2002, Dawson accepted an invitation to serve for five years as Haverford’s Provost, a position that combines much of the responsibility that Earlham allocates to both its Provost and Academic Dean.
“I am extremely happy to introduce David as Earlham’s new President,” says Hull. “He brings with him a wealth of scholarship and a deep commitment to social justice issues. Throughout his career, David has always been a very strong faculty member and has long had a strong relationship with students and fellow faculty members. As someone whose personal values mirror those of Earlham, he is the ideal person to lead the College forward.”

Dawson reports that he is “honored to join the Earlham community and to lead such an extraordinary institution. I am very excited to begin our journey together.”

Dawson received a B.A. from Towson State University, an M.Div. from Duke University’s Divinity School, and an M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. from Yale University. He also has been named the Pennsylvania Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
In addition to overseeing the operations of the liberal arts college and the Earlham School of Religion, Dawson has also been named a full professor in the Department of Religion.
Hull thanked the members of the Presidential Search Committee for their work during the last several months. Hull and Board Secretary Ray Ontko ’84 co-convened the committee, which included additional Board member Bobbie Gottschalk ’64 and Rob Bresler ’59, who is a past Board member and past chair of the Alumni Council; faculty and staff representatives Trayce Peterson ’82, ESR’98, Gypsy Swanger ’90, Donna Sykes, Lonnie Valentine ESR’83 and Mark Van Buskirk; and student representative Anne Marie Roderick ’11.
Dawson and his wife Ellen have two children, a son who attends Macalester College and a daughter who is currently a junior in high school. Ellen Dawson will stay in Pennsylvania while their daughter finishes high school and will join Dawson in Richmond in 2012. Dawson begins his tenure at Earlham on July 1, 2011.
He replaces the retiring Douglas C. Bennett, who has served as Earlham’s President since 1997.

Press Release Submitted by Earlham College

David Naegeli

RICHMOND, Ind. (February 2011)— The Earlham College cross country program earned national recognition on Friday as both teams along with Jacob Naegeli were honored by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The Earlham men’s team had the top GPA out of the 125 Div. III schools on the list with a 3.58. This is the second time the men’s program has produced the highest GPA having achieved the honor in 2001. The Earlham women’s team was among a group of 167 with a 3.49 GPA.

“I am pleased our women and men’s cross country teams have reached such a high level of success in the classroom,” Earlham Head Coach Pat Thomas said. “That our men’s team has the top cumulative GPA among the nation’s Division III cross country teams is indeed a special honor.”

A team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.10 or better and have compiled a score (finished at least five runners) at their respective NCAA regional championship.

Naegeli (Trout Creek, MT, Thompson Falls) was one of 142 competitors named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team.

“We also are quite proud of Jacob’s ability to combine his excellence as a runner with that in the classroom,” Thomas said.

Naegeli earned all-region honors last fall in the NCAA Div. III Great Lakes Regional at Hope College. In the 8K race, he had a time of 25:54.5 to finish in 28th place.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most-recent semester and placed in the top 35 at the NCAA Regional Championships.

Shakespeare’s Comedy Of Errors Moves Audience At Earlham

shakespeare at earlham college 003

Another amazing performance at Earlham College!  Following a few hours at another event we were uncertain about being able to stay alert for Shakespeare—but awake we were and loved every minute of it.

It says a lot when a five and a half year old can watch Shakespeare and laugh, glued to every word for ninety minutes.  The acting drew you into the moment even if you didn’t quite understand all the references within the Shakespearian language.

Playing to a packed house, the actors who brought Shakespeare’s The Comedy Of Errors were marvelous.

Kaitlin Brennan, a student at Earlham, commented after the show that they were reading Shakespeare in a class at Earlham and had covered this particular play.  She said they all wondered how the staging would be done and said “It was amazing.” And the interpretation was “so good.”

Dick Holden, retired from Public Relations at Earlham shared that “you can really tell the difference with a professional group such as this one.”

The final revelation of the error of this farce brought cheers from the crowd, and a standing ovation as the curtain came down.

The Acting Company is a recipient of the Tony Honor For Excellence in Theater, and the artists advisory board includes actors such as: Robin Williams, Olympia Dukakis, Kevin Kline and many others.  The high caliber of theatre is just amazing to witness at a small liberal arts college such as Earlham.  And yet the events just keep coming and garner the same enthusiasm from the community.

As Mickey White, professor of theatre and stage crafting at Earlham said, “It is really amazing to see the touring company from Guthrie.”

With one more Artist and Lecture Series event to come to Earlham this year “Truth Serum Blues,” if you haven’t been you won’t want to miss this one.  (You can see the reaction of the crowd at Comedy of Errors in the short video clip below).

marcie roberts

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 22, 2011 – 11:00 a.m.

Earlham College, Richmond IN

RICHMOND, Ind. — “Earlham College students studying in New Zealand are safe following a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that struck the island nation earlier today. Director of International Programs Patty Lamson reports that she has received word from program director Jay Roberts that all are safe and accounted for.

“We are obviously deeply concerned for the students’ safety and we are consulting about ways in which the operation of the program may be effected. ” she says.

Lamson notes that Roberts, an associate professor who also directs Earlham’s Wilderness Programs, is skilled in leading programs in adverse conditions.

“The group is obviously dealing with changed conditions that are typical in the wake of an earthquake.  Although we have had direct communication with the program, we understand that phone lines have been compromised so communication may be spotty,” she notes.

Seventeen Earlham College students are spending this semester in New Zealand along with Jay Roberts, his wife, Marcie, and their two young daughters.

We will release additional information as it becomes available.” (Earlham College)

Marcie Roberts

Note: Marcie Roberts is also School Coordinator for the Richmond Friends School.  She is on leave from her work at RFS while in New Zealand, with her husband Jay Roberts and daughters Ellie and Arden, who also attend RFS.  The parents, teachers, staff and children all wish them safe travels.

East Village Opera Company Rocks The Auditorium At Earlham College

Ann Marie Milazzo - Lead Female Vocalist
Carpenter Hall, on the Earlam College Campus

Carpenter Hall/Goddard Auditorium

This past weekend we were reminded of how fortunate we are to live in a community that has a well known and highly regarded liberal arts college like Earlham.  And one of the many perks is that we get to witness musical events like the East Village Opera Company on Saturday night. (See video below)

It is an amazing experience to sit in the audience and savor such talent.  The vocalists were incredible and the musicians were energetic, engaged and highly talented.

One felt transported, as if sitting in Carnegie Hall or on Broadway.  It seemed surreal to be in a small Midwestern town enjoying the caliber of music that the East Village Opera Company brought to us on Saturday night.

AnnMarie Milazzo, Lead Female Vocalist

The opera pieces, set to contemporary music with backup including drums, bass, violins, cello and guitar, were stirring.  And all ages in the audience were moved and involved with the music, while the room was alive with the awe shared by the crowd of over 500 people.

“300 year old songs set to such contemporary music”

Following the performance professor of metal arts Nathan Jones and his wife Linda said they were just amazed at “300 year old songs set to such contemporary music.”  They shared that “they didn’t know what to expect!” But both agreed it was amazing.  The look on their young daughter Lucia’s face said everything. With twinkling eyes and a broad smile no words were needed.

Lynn Knight, in charge of events at Earlham, shared that this was the group’s first performance together in a year and they chose to come together at Earlham College.  We are fortunate that we were able to witness their performance together.

Male vocalist Tyley Ross

said, about performing at Earlham, that the “size of the venue was more intimate” and he enjoyed being able to engage a responsive audience. Tyley, lead female vocalist AnnMarie Milazzo and the other performers are all involved in projects individually as well.  You can Google them to see what they have coming up next.  Peter Kiesewalter co-partner of the group was recently written up in the New York Times.

Gospel Revs Concert A Moving Experience At Earlham College

gospel revs and decorating and lighting of advent wreath church 017

Sunday evening we enjoyed a moving experience at Earlham College as we watched the Gospel Revelations choir directed by Shenita and Patrick Piper.

Taking me back to my time in the choir as an Earlham student, the energy and excitement of the multi-cultural choir members reminded me of my experience 10 years ago.  As Shenita instructed the audience to allow the children to dance in the aisles if they wish and invited all to participate, I remembered my own anticipation as we prepared to sing years ago.

As instructed, the audience did participate–clapping while sitting or on their feet, and singing along with the choir.  One could hardly sit still with the music inviting you to sway and dance along with the beat.

You can see the genuine depth of feeling on the faces of the choir as they belt out the gospel music.  Watch the video below to see for yourselves just how moving an experience a Gospel Revs Concert can be–and the next time you see them scheduled to sing at Earlham, be sure to be there.  Continue to check the GoWayneCounty.com calendar to find this and other community events at Earlham College and throughout Wayne County.

Williamsburg Community Days…Fun For All

Pony Pull

By Mary Mills, Member Contributor

Pony Pull

This past weekend was a nice weekend to go to The Williamsburg Community Days. It was kicked off on Friday evening with a miniature pony pull ran by Mark Stamper. He was pleased with the turnout however he would like to see more ponies in next year’s event.

There was an American Indian Reenactment which  a lot of people were interested in watching.  They actually cooked their food and camped out overnight.

There were also three generations of the Keiser family with their ponies at the pull—Melvin, Todd, Anthony and Trevor Keiser.

Reenactment Camp

Of course there was plenty to eat including funnel cakes, and the Rollin Mills was there serving Hot Dogs, Roasted Corn on the cob and Mary’s (Mary Mills)  special made Coney sauce, along with other food vendors like Pete’s Corner Café (located in the Depot District in Richmond Indiana) who was cooking up some barbeque.

Tractor Display

Tractors were on display which had been part of the parade that kicked off after the all-you-can-eat breakfast sponsored by the community center.

Carriage In The Parade

There were many entries in the parade including vintage cars, a carriage, and the fire department.  The day ended with a tractor pull.  The event ran from Friday to Saturday at 6:00 p.m.  Feedback from the Williamsburg community was positive and all enjoyed the event,  and would like to see it grow and expand for next year.
