Each day of camp, the children receive a free lunch prepared by Richmond Community Schools through the USDA Summer Food Service Program. Morning sessions of J.U.K.O. are held at Springwood Lake Park and Vaile Elementary School from 9am-Noon. Afternoon sessions of J.U.K.O. are held at Glen Miller Park and Mary Scott Park from 1-4pm.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays both morning and afternoon sessions meet at the Cordell Municipal Pool

Morning campers benefit from the pool being closed to the public. “For parent’s who are concerned about their child’s swimming experience, the morning sessions are a great fit. Besides swim lesson attendees, we are the only ones at the pool,” shares camp director Blair Beach, Community Recreation Coordinator for the parks department. The program will also implement a new swimming evaluation program this year, through a kit from Church Mutual Insurance Company. Children will be evaluated on their swimming level by the lifeguards and receive color coded bracelets which designate what areas of the pool they are able to swim in.

On Fridays, the camp will attend field trips to The Skate, Hayes Arboretum and Family Fitness just to name a few. 5th and 6th grade campers also attend special field trips on Monday.

Counselors for the program are certified in CPR and First Aid, attend a one-week training camp, and pass a police background and sex offender’s check prior to camp.

Sights and Sounds of Spring in Wayne County…

Having Fun With A Bead Activity At "Spring Fling"

It’s Spring!

Riverrat Signing Up For Gift Basket 2010

The other day I was walking onto the stadium grounds to meet Deanna from the RiverRats.  She was donating a gift certificate for four tickets to a game this season as a door prize for the Dream Keeper’s Dance.  And Spring was in the air.

As I walked onto the grounds the sights, smells and sounds of Spring hit me.  I could almost see the spectators in the stands and hear cheers, the clank of a bat hitting the ball, and smell corn popping.  It’s not that far away as the teams are going into Spring training season.  And the grass is already turning that bright green Easter basket color.

Having Fun With A Bead Activity At "Spring Fling"

A couple of weeks ago the Richmond Parks and Recreation Department sponsored a “Spring Fling.”  Different agencies were there to display all the exciting programs they have available for Spring and Summer this year.

Cope Environmental Center and Hayes Arboretum have outdoor adventures for children and adults to enjoy.  The YMCA has sports events to join like softball and soccer.  The Parks Department, of course, is offering all kinds of fun adventures for children and families this year.  And sign up for Lemonade Days was available which included a bag with instructions on how to have a safe and successful lemonade stand.  (Lemonade Days is Sunday, May 1st).

"Spring Fling"

The children enjoyed all the fun climbers and games that were offered by the parks department and it’s a reminder that Spring and Summer games are just around the corner.

In the video below you can witness for yourself the sounds of Spring by our house.  Across the road at the Cope Environmental Center the “peepers” (little mud frogs) are announcing the first days of Spring with their little, sometimes deafening, songs.

Happy Spring everyone!
