HAGERSTOWN, IN — The skies over Hagerstown will again be filled with vintage aircraft as the town’s unique airport will host the 4th Annual Hagerstown’s Flying Circus Tuesday, July 19. “It will be festive, fun, free and family friendly,” announces Denny Burns, who chairs the event sponsored by the Hagerstown Optimist Club.

Visitors to Hagerstown’s airport will be treated to a wide array of vintage aircraft, fun food, and a chance to meet the pilots before the evening entertainment begins. “Bring a lawn chair or a blanket, and have a great time,” adds the chairman. Admission and parking are free.

Burns announced that the aerial games and other fun events will be staged from 6 to 8 p.m. this year. But, visitors will be able to see the planes up close from the time gates open at 2 p.m.

Led by Andrew King, the stunt pilot from the movie “Fly Boys,”

Pilots of pre-1947 aircraft will descend on Hagerstown that Tuesday afternoon in preparation for the event. “The Hagerstown Airport is great,” says King, “We loved it the past three years. It’s not often we get to see such a large airport that’s also a grassy airport. Old planes like grass because that’s what they were built for.”

Hagerstown is the ideal location for Eastern and Great Lakes pilots to land while en route to the largest gathering of historic aircraft every year in Oshkosh, Wis., according to Marvin Stohler of Hagerstown’s Airport Board. The event was launches in 2008 as part of the centennial celebration of the Ford Model T, when thousands of Model T owners and celebrants gathered at the Hagerstown Airport.

Pilots are expected to camp under the wings of their planes the night of July 19 and depart about noon the next day, weather permitting. Visitors attending the July 19 event will be able to meet and speak with the pilots beginning early afternoon that date.

Anyone with questions about the event may contact Bob Warner, Hagerstown town manager, at (765) 489-6171 or Denny Burns, event chairman at (765) 489-5829. The rain date is Wednesday, July 20.

* The address of the Hagerstown Airport is: 999 South Washington Street, Hagerstown, IN 47346.

For more information… or questions, please contact: Denny Burns, chairman (765) 489-5829 dburns@parallax.ws

If you have never seen the Flying Circus…you won’t want to miss it this year! It is truly amazing!

pilots of pre-1947 aircraft will descend on Hagerstown that Tuesday afternoon in preparation for the event.

Anyone with questions about the event may contact Bob Warner, Hagerstown town manager,

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the first running of the 500-mile race in 1911. The IMS developed a contest for communities to show their spirit for this celebration. Communities, cities and towns in Indiana were given the opportunity to enter the “Back Home Again In Indiana” decorating contest. Twenty-six communities entered and ten finalists were announced last week. The winner will be given $25,000 for their community.

Hagerstown, Indiana was one of the top ten communities selected. Their entry into the contest can be found on a new website, www.indy500hagerstown.com.

The judging criteria will be based on the internet media and the town’s decoration for the 500-mile race. Both celebrity judges and the public will determine the winner.

Anyone can vote for the town to win. Each day a vote can be placed on the Back Home Again in Indiana website of the Indiana Motor Speedway. One vote per day from each email will be accepted. Voting ends on May 25 when the winner is announced.

Hagerstown was represented at the first race in 1911 by members of the Teetor family, owners of the Light Inspection Car Co. By 1926, after having changed its name a few times, became Perfect Circle Corporation. The Hagertown band, sponsored by the Light Inspection Car Co. played at the first race and for many years after. Perfect Circle sponsored cars in 1927 but had no winner. That was the last of the car sponsorships for them but began providing race drivers with Perfect Circle piston rings. Many winners through the years have used PC rings and other products in their cars.

Many people have connections to Perfect Circle, Hagerstown and Central Indiana. Hagerstown’s interest and participation with the Indy 500 will surprise and entertain as you read the history and timeline and look at the pictures on the website. The people of Hagerstown ask that you support their entry into the contest by voting for them as often as you can.

See events listed below to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Indy 500 in Hagerstown Indiana

By Carolyn Lafever

The Indianapolis Speedway ran its first 500-mile race in 1911. Folks from Hagerstown, including the Teetor family, attended the inaugural race and brought their Light Inspection Car Co. band to perform. In 1926, the company name was changed to the Perfect Circle Corporation. PC was to become the largest manufacturers of piston rings in the world with a long association with the Indy 500.

From 1922 to 1941, PC made rings for racecars, sponsored three cars, sent their band each year and gave prizes to race drivers. Support for the race continued to grow with Hagerstown and Perfect Circle.

The race stopped from 1941-45 because of WW II. In 1946 Ralph Teetor, a brilliant engineer who lost his sight at five years of age, became President of PC and encouraged the track owners to start the race again. Perfect Circle contracted with Mutual Broadcasting to sponsor the first coast-to-coast radio broadcast of the race from 1946 to 1951.

Hagerstown Museum & Arts Place Celebrating The History of Indy 500

Perfect Circle grew and many Hagerstown people worked for them. PC established an office at the Speedway and engineers spent the month of May assisting race drivers. Piston rings and other products were made especially for the race cars. It benefited both the company and the racers to observe the stress on the mechanical parts.

They made movies of the races to be shown at the “Doctor of Motors” clinics

Perfect Circle purchased a block of race tickets each year as well as sponsoring race parties for their jobbers. They made movies of the races to be shown at the “Doctor of Motors” clinics. Hagerstown was enthusiastic about supporting the race and sending fans.

In 1963, Perfect Circle was sold to Dana Corporation. Gradually participation in the race declined, but Hagerstown’s enthusiasm did not. In 2011, Hagerstown will celebrate the 100th anniversary with events commemorating their long history with the Indy 500.
