Best Indiana Pie

Richmond, Indiana – Olde Richmond Inn and Stone Hearth Café have both been nominated in Indiana State Tourism’s Best Indiana Pie Contest. Participants can then vote for up to 5 of their favorite pies online. The top ten finalists will be revealed on October 15th. Olde Richmond Inn is located at 138 S. 5th St. in an historic Victorian home built in 1892. Converted to a restaurant in 1984, the Inn has been nominated for their very popular peanut butter pie.

Stone Hearth Café is located in the Warm Glow Candle Company Outlet on 1-70 west of Richmond. Opened in 2008, Stone Hearth Café has been nominated for the wonderful variety of fruit cobblers on their daily menu.

Locally Owned Toy Store Featured In Country Living Magazine

Copy (2) of veach's block party 012

Veach’s, locally owned and operated in Richmond for many decades, is featured in the current edition of Country Living Magazine.

Sitting at my aunt’s table tonight,  it was quite exciting to see the store we grew up with featured in a national magazine which recognized the success and longevity of the toy store, which was once a five and dime when it began in the 30′s.

Shown in the picture highlighted in Country Living Magazine, are the current owner and his granddaughter Baleigh standing amongst the wonderful display of trains available at their store.  There is also mention of John Veach, son, and also manager of the daily operations at Veaches.

Mr Veach demonstrating a toy this summer

Memories of the birthday castle and the changes the store has gone through came flooding back as I read the article touting the achievements of maintaining a locally owned store.

When you are looking for that unique toy  or game for your special child this Christmas remember Veach’s, a now nationally recognized store in our midst, with the same hometown feel that has served us all from our own childhoods to our children’s.

A Significant Day To Remember Those Who Have Served & Are Serving

Braving the cold to honor our Veteran's

Braving the cold to honor our Veteran's

On a brisk November day hearts were warmed as many braved the chill in the air to participate in the Veteran’s Day Ceremony outside the Richmond City Building today.

We were reminded of the significance of the day’s service falling on the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year and during the 11th hour.  This, said the master of ceremonies, only happens every 100 years.  It made the day seem even more special.

Pastor of the Central United Methodist Church, himself a Veteran of the Vietnam War, called all to prayer and later closed the ceremony with a familiar Christmas story of the soldier who watches over a family on Christmas Eve—a story that brought tears to many eyes.

The guest speaker, Colonel William T. (Tim) Cahoon who has served in both Afghanistan and Baghdad, reminded everyone of the sacrifice that Veteran’s and those serving today have made and are making.  He said that few expect or ask for recognition but they should get it anyway, suggesting that as we meet a Veteran today we shake their hand, thank them for their service and listen to their stories if they choose to share.  But, he also added that not just today but every day we should remember their sacrifices and thank them.

Reelected Mayor, Sally Hutton read the Veteran’s Day Proclamation making this an official day of recognition in Wayne County for all who have served.

From Left: Pastor of the Central United Methodist, Mayor Sally Hutton, Guest Speaker a Colonel who served in both Afghanistan & Baghdad, & Commander of Post 65 Legion

See the video below to experience part of today’s service.  We would like to thank all those who have served and are serving, including our own family members.  We appreciate your dedication, while leaving family and loved ones behind.  It is a great sacrifice.

Turtle Island Quartet

The GRAMMY@ award winning Turtle Island Quartet has taken its audiences on a journey through many musical genres, eras and places. Today’s program features music from John Coltrane and Jimi Hendrix. A Love Supreme recorded four decades ago at a time when the country was deeply troubled by issues of race and war, Coltrane’s music was a personal statement of redemption and salvation becoming one of the most enduring jazz recordings of all time.  Earlham College, 7:30 p.m.  Read more at GoWayneCounty.com.

Turtle Island Quartet Comes To Earlham College November 5, 2011

Turtle Island String Quartet

Date: Saturday, November 5, 2011
Time: 7:30 pm
Location: Goddard Auditorium, Carpenter Hall
Tickets needed (see below)

The reimagined music of legends Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane will fill Goddard Auditorium as the Grammy-award winning Turtle Island Quartet takes the stage on Saturday, November 5.

The Artist and Lecture Series event begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are required and cost $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available by calling Earlham’s Office of Events at (765)983-1373.

Turtle Island has created bold trends

Since its 1985 inception, Turtle Island has created bold trends in chamber music for strings. Winner of the 2006 and 2008 Grammy Award for the Best Classical Crossover category, Turtle Island fuses the classical quartet aesthetic with contemporary American musical styles. For the Earlham performance, the Quartet recreates Coltrane’s enduring jazz recordings and Hendrix’s legendary masterpieces.

Quartet founder and violinist David Balakrishnan says he thinks that given the proper conditions, a work of art can transcend both genre and era, and such is the case with Coltrane’s jazz epiphany, A Love Supreme.

In exploring Coltrane’s musical legacy, Turtle Island continues its tradition of employing the string quartet form to shed new light on the timeless joy and beauty of American jazz music. The concert presents an in-depth look at this landmark recording in the greater context of the music that preceded and followed, a time many consider to be the last great evolutionary period of jazz.

Balakrishnan considers Hendrix one of his biggest musical influences

During an interview with National Public Radio, Balakrishnan says that while listening to Electric Ladyland a few years ago he was struck by how Hendrix’s writing for guitar suited the style of string quartets.

“(He) wasn’t playing a bunch of chords the way a guitar player would normally play,” he says in the August 2010 NPR interview. “But with Electric Ladyland, he was really layering melodies, and the way he played the guitar, he could really get that sinuous vibrato that creates this texture and bed of melodic fragments laid on top of each other — perfect for a string quartet like Turtle Island.”

In addition to the Hendrix pieces from Electric Ladyland, Turtle Island has tackled a solo cello rendition of “Little Wing” and a crowd-pleasing, slower, more ballad-like rock treatment of “Hey Joe.”

Turtle Island Quartet original members Balakrishnan and cellist Mark Summer are joined by Danish jazz violinist Mads Tolling and U.S. National Scottish fiddle champion Jeremy Kittel.
Ticket Information

Tickets are required and cost $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. General admission tickets will be available beginning August 15.

Let The Season Begin…Church Bazaars Starting This Weekend

Craft Fair, 2010

Craft Fair, 2010

Tis The Season

I don’t know about you, but church bazaars seem like the real ushering in of the holiday season for me.

Growing up we were involved with preparations for our own family church bazaar at the 2nd Presbyterian Church, which used to be on North 19th Street. Our Grandma Kendall was a Sunday School teacher and so we were all delegated to pitch in.

As we got older and could help more it was a lot more meaningful. We worked at craft tables, the cake walk, “reaching for the stars” and fishing for prizes. We even had an old “white elephant” table. I loved working the fishing area and selecting just the right toy for the child standing behind the curtain.

So when I see signs for church craft shows and bazaars I just want to tell everyone about it- assuming you all feel the way I do, and I hope many of you do.

This Saturday you have two chances

to support a local church and pick up some wonderful homemade foods and crafts. The Central United Methodist Church on Main Street in Richmond,  will be holding their bi-annual craft fair from 9:30 to 2:00 p.m. with a preview night on Friday from 7-8 p.m. There is no cost for admission. According to a representative of the church, they will offer a cafe, handmade crafts which will include Fall, Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations, and baked goods. Proceeds will go to support the United Methodist Womens Mission locally and globally.

Another chance for an old fashioned church bazaar is at the Central Christian Church on National Road West, going towards Centerville IN, on your left. This annual craft show will be open from the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and there is no cost for admission. Homemade foods and baked goods will be available to purchase as well as holiday decorations, crafts and other vendors (last year there were childrens’ books for sale and Tupperware as well).

So this weekend- have a great time at the church bazaars, while you shop local and find some really unique gift items. And don’t forget to get a treat for yourself! (that is the best part)

Hundreds Of Children Attend Trunk Or Treat At Wayne County Fairgrounds

A Strange Pair of Friends....

A Strange Pair of Friends....

Trunk or Treat, sponsored again by the Richmond Parks and Recreation Department, was a great “treat” for the hundreds of children who ventured out on a cold night last Wednesday.

So many cute ghouls and boys rounded the circle of decorated trunks with costumed adults and children handing out candy.  And then, indoors to the games and costume contests, food and fun.  It was a great night for the children and those who helped put on the event.

During the costume contest the crowd was also entertained by a magician while the judges tallied their votes for the 7 years and up category.  The judges included the RiverRat and other well known personalities and their task was daunting with so many wonderful entries.

See the video below of the magician’s act and find more pictures of the many children who attended, on our facebook site at Go Wayne County.  Thanks to all  who worked so hard to bring this event to the community.

A Night At The Museum & Homerun Haunt

mcbride halloween and haunted museum mg in witch costume 069

Haunted Museum Tour 2011

Tonight we enjoyed a trip to the museum for the second annual Haunted Museum Tour.  And though we really enjoyed last year- this year was even better.

Added to the tour this year was an outdoor cemetery, a witch telling stories in the old school house and human mannequins that really shocked us when they moved.  A talking genie head entertained onlookers as they passed by downstairs and many 3D posters seemed to jump right out at you, while a hidden alien surprised us in one of the old shops.

Visits may have more than tripled the count from last year

It was a great evening brought to the community by dedicated museum volunteers and board members.  It was reported that this year the number of visits may have more than tripled the count from last year which shows how much people have enjoyed this event at the museum.

We can hardly wait to see what will be in store for us next year.  (For more pictures you can visit the Go Wayne County Facebook site).

Also on Facebook under Go Wayne County will be pictures from the Homerun Haunt event from McBride Stadium today.  See some of the many cute children in costume including our own little witch.  A great night for kids and adults tonight!  Look to the week ahead on the GoWayneCounty.com events calendar.  There is more excitement to come.

Last Weekend’s Antique Show In Cambridge City A Success For All Who Participated

antique show cambridge inauguration 010

Whether you were in Cambridge City to purchase antiques or to show them, many walked away happy last weekend.

Vendors came from all over, including Tennessee and Kansas City

bringing some unique antiques with them for display.  A local collector from Richmond, Robbie Lee, said he had been busy all that  morning at his booth set up with items including books, refinished furniture and other collectibles.

Both sides of main street were lined with vendors, as well as antique shops being opened such as the Log House Antiques whose owner was one of the coordinators of the event.  Several vendors were set up around the grounds of their establishment.  (see more photos on GoWayneCounty’s Facebook site).

Lumpy’s Café and The Pour House

both reported being very busy last Saturday, with lines at the counter in both places.  It was a success as well for many who came to find a one of a kind antique or collectible, savor some good homemade food and purchase decorative gourds for the holidays.  There was something for everyone and it will hopefully become an annual event.

If you have an event coming up and would like us to cover it or need advertising, just let us know.  Go to GoWayneCounty.com and click “contact.”  Send us your request and we will put your event on our calendar, and if we can we will cover it for you as well.  We love to be invited—but we may show up anyway.
