Richmond-Wayne County Convention & Tourism Bureau

The Wayne County Convention and Tourism Bureau will host an historic Tree Planting and Plaque Dedication on Saturday, Oct. 8^th beginning at 11:00 am.  The event will take place on the west lawn of the Jacob B. Julian home, 116 E. Plum Street, Centerville, IN, and is sponsored by First Bank Richmond.

The home is presently being restored by the owners Gail Martin and Mark Redman but will not be open to the public at this time.

Alice Downey Browning, great great granddaughter of Jacob B. Julian, will be present to plant the Indiana state Tulip tree in honor and memory of Mr. Julian.  Mrs. Browning resides in Chadron, Nebraska.  Several other members of the Julian family from around the country are expected to attend the ceremony.

Jacob Julian, a well known attorney and statesman, served in the Indiana House of Representatives in 1846.  He built the present home in 1857.  When the Wayne County Court House was moved toRichmond in 1873, he and his brother George W. Julian, congressman from Centerville, moved toIrvington, IN.   Jacob Julian, along with Sylvester Johnson, founded the town of Irvington, five miles east of downtown Indianapolis.

Mr. Julian also built the historic Oliver P. Morton home on West Main Street in Centerville in 1848.  The Julians are buried in Centerville’s Crown Hill Cemetery.

A reception will be held immediately following at the Centerville Library and the public is invited.  Displays and exhibits of the Julian family along with historic pictures will be available to view.

All entries (quilts and handwork items) are to be submitted on Tuesday, August 23, from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  at the Mansion House.  Items may be picked up after 5 p.m. on Saturday.

On Saturday, August 27, Carolyn Lafever, Wayne County Historian, will be in the Court House behind the Mansion House with new displays and information regarding the 6 Wayne County Court Houses.  She will be there from 12:30 – 4 p.m.

Admission to the Quilt and Handwork Show is $5 and the money is used for the restoration and maintenance of the Mansion House Inn & Tavern as well as the Salisbury Court House and Railroad Shanty,  also on the property.

Join us as we set our sites to the stars!  We will begin with a program learning about the constellations with Theresa Hurd and then take a hike out to see some of the stars from great spots throughout Cope Environmental Center.  Program fee:  $3 per person.  CEC and Hayes Arboretum members are free.

Historic Centerville’s annual Quilt and Handwork Show will be held on Friday and Saturday, August 26 and 27, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m at the Mansion House on Main Street in Centerville.

Quilts and Handwork items will be submitted on Tuesday, August 23, from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Items may be picked up after 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Yogi Bear: Outdoor Movie Series

At Fairview Elementary, 60 NW L St., brought to you by Richmond Parks and Recreation. Going to the theater can be expensive, so spend your summer watching movies with us! The 15th annual Outdoor Movie Series has moved back into the neighborhoods! New this year, each movie will be held at a neighborhood park or elementary school. Neighbors are encouraged to walk to the event but everyone in the community is welcome! Bring your chairs, blankets, and snacks for a great show under the stars. Kids’ activities begin at 8:30 pm. Concessions will be available at each movie.

Rockin The Gorge With Dire Skates (Friday & Saturday)

The annual Rockin The Gorge is coming this weekend starting on Friday afternoon going into the day on Saturday.  Dire Skates will be on the grounds tonight in the gorge doing a “mini bout” at 8:30 p.m.  Many local and out of town bands are expected to play at this exciting event which is a favorite each year.

Historic Centerville will be hosting its second annual Home and Garden Tour on Saturday, July 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, July 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets may be bought for $5 on the day of the tour at the Centerville Farmer’s Market for $5 each.

Saturday, July 9, 2011-Quincy Gems; Start time: 7:05 PM Gates Open: 6:05 PM; Celebrate Independence Day with the RiverRats tonight. The fireworks show will immediately follow the game. Your kids can run the bases, meet the players and get their autographs.

Joseph And the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Friday & Saturday)

Richmond Civic Theatre is proud to present JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT as the summer fundraiser. “JOSEPH” is a favorite among RCT patrons. This production promises the same great songs, colorful costumes, and familiar Biblical story. Although RCT has previously presented “JOSEPH” two times, this production promises a fresh look at the popular musical. Director Renee Arnett says “The directors and cast of Joseph have had an AMAZING time putting together a fun filled show! Hand clapping, sing along fun is what is in store for all those that attend! Hike Yourself Healthy is going strong! The community has hiked 3695 miles already! We are on target to hit our community goal of 10,000.  People can sign up any time and begin logging their miles. We have weekly drawings for prizes, a mid summer pool party for participants on July 24 and an end of the season celebration on Sept 9.  Businesses and groups can also compete for a winning package of chair massages and lunch from Chipotle. Property on Pottershop Road

Ruth Bane and Myra Baldwin started the first annual Historic Centerville Home and Garden Tour in 2010. Ruth and Myra plan to do this annually as long as they can find worthy gardens, kitchens, and homes. Their goal is to find those property owners who have done the yard work themselves. Creativity is important and as long as the property is in Wayne County – it qualifies.

This year, one of the properties is on Potter Shop Road and the dry creek bed is well worth the drive to see.  Diane Price went to farmers and asked if she could pick up rocks out of their fields for her project. She is a hard worker and her husband Jim works right along with her.  She is always on the lookout for starts and will also share what she has in her yard if there is enough to dig up.

You will find that this year’s property owners probably have dirt under their fingernails, a smile, and a willingness to share their expertise with all who visit. The $5 ticket will get you a day of entertainment and fellowship that you will not soon forget.
