Back To E Street

gravel - the band - the myth

Hosts Brian Elstro and Megan Eversole

Hello All.  After my brief hiatus it was really great to see you out again at the E Street Pub.  The music has only gotten better and better.  We really need more shows like this one around town.

The show last night was hosted by one of the most talented people I know Megan Eversole, and co-hosted by none other than Mr. Grumbles himself the awesome drummer Brian Elstro.  And there were so many great musicians; just like always.  I feel like writing about this event can and may have become redundant, but until you come down and see it for yourself.. and yes I’m talking to you.. you will listen (i.e. read) to every single word I have to say (i.e. type).  I kid, I kid.  But seriously do yourself a favor and come down and join us next Thursday night at E Street.  It’s a friendly environment and no one will force you to drink if you don’t wanna.  Just come see what amazing musicians Richmond has to offer.

Booty Shaking Techno Turtle

cartoon turtle

Born in New York City, NY, at an early age an unfortunate accident landed Techno Turtle in the sewage system swimming around in bright green toxic ooze. As he grew older and stronger, Techno Turtle discovered his love for all things Rave. His hair styles and piercings. His uncanny sense of fashion. And of course his unnatural love for being scrubbed with a toothbrush.

Watch as booty shaking Techno Turtle brings the heat with his new dance moves:

Surrounding Area Fireworks: Hueston Woods State Park, Ohio

fws hw

Wide open spaces at Hueston Woods State Park in Ohio, North of College Corner and Oxford. Of course you had the folks playing football, and volleyball and soccer, and kids throwing baseballs. And of course you took one in the head from time to time, but when the fireworks show started that all dulled down to a just below a loud roar.

The works were across the lake, so a little far away from where everyone was sitting on the beach. And it was kind of neat how you’d see the firework and hear it a second or so later, but they were very beautiful.

In all I’m glad I got to go on this little firework tour adventure in our closely surrounding areas, it reminded me of a much younger and magical time. Like little to no responsibility time. :)

There’s something magical about fireworks. There’s absolutely no way you can be in a bad mood while watching.

Here are some scenes from Metamora, Indiana’s Firework Show. Please pay no attention to the power lines in the foreground, we didn’t. :)

Saturday night’s firework show in Brookville, Indiana really took me back to my younger days. It has been a while since I’ve been to a fireworks show, through my own neglect, and I’m really glad that I went.

Here are some scenes from the show set to music:

Small Town Series in Wayne County: Hagerstown

Hagerstown Airport at the south end of Washington Street, built in 1957-1958. The first airstrip was on the south side of Main Street, east of town. Courtesy of Jason Schmittler.

Known as the upper terminal of the Whitewater Canal, which extends to Lawerenceburg, Indiana, the town of Hagerstown was born in 1832.

In 1847 the final eight miles of the Whitewater Canal was completed from Hagerstown to Cambridge City. Hagerstown had formed its own company to finish the canal when it was stopped at Cambridge City. Flooding was a problem south on the canal so the canal engineer built Hagerstown’s section on the west side of the valley. It was several feet higher than the level of the stream. Because of the higher elevation, there was almost no flood damage to Hagerstown’s end of the canal. However farther south, flood waters damaged the canal in 1847 and again in 1865. The costly repairs and poor return on investments caused the canal to go out of business.

The Big Four Railroad built on the old towpath of the old canal in Hagerstown. A turntable and engine house for the railroad were at the south end of town on Washington Street. Passenger service was discontinued in the 1920’s but freight service on the Big Four continued until 1931. The Pennsylvania railroad line from Chicago to Cincinnati also came through Hagerstown. The line now is called the Norfolk Southern Railway.

In 1895 a new Hagerstown business was organized, the Railway Cycle Manufacturing Company. Charles N. Teetor invented a “railway cycle” which became the Light Inspection Car for inspecting railroad tracks. Later the company (Teetor-Hartley Motor Company, 1914) manufactured automobile motors. They produced many engines for Indiana car makers and the Auburn was their largest customer. The company sold the motor division but kept the growing business of piston rings. In October 1926, the name was changed to the Perfect Circle Company. It became one of the largest piston ring manufacturers in the world. Perfect Circle was sold to Dana Corporation in 1963. The Hagerstown facility closed in 1995.

There are many interesting characters in Hagerstown’s past. One of them, Johnnie Horine, was known as the “globe-trotting bootblack.” Johnnie shined shoes and saved his small earnings for his world travels. He traveled to the Middle East and the Holy Land in 1925 and attended every World Exposition from the 1890’s. Johnnie always started his trips on his lucky day, June 21, the longest day of the year.

Other historic and interesting facts about Hagerstown:

1809 The Twelve Mile Purchase from the Indians in which Hagerstown was formed.

1834 Jefferson Township was formed.

1867 Wilbur Wright was born in nearby Millville, Indiana.

1912 Boy Scouts started in Hagerstown.

Invented by Ralph R. Teetor, Cruise Control, originally known as Speedostat, was first introduced in the 1958 chrysler.

Middlefork Reservoir Cleanup Effort

003

Brian Grimes, Founder of The Friends of Middlefork Reservoir Organization

We went out to the reservoir this past weekend to help The Friends of Middlefork Reservoir with the cleanup effort.  I was surprised at how much trash and especially cigarette butts there was strewn all over the grounds.  It’s really sad and eye-opening to see this first hand, especially when you think about all the kids that come out to play here.

Emma and Brice Grimes

There are plenty of trash cans around and it just takes a very minimal effort to put the trash where it belongs.  It looks as though some tried maybe, with all the trash that was piled around the trash cans… almost in them.  Anyway, not being preachy.  :)   I guess if we’d all start thinking this way and take the time before we flick that cigarette butt on the ground we can keep this beautiful area what it’s meant to be, beautiful.

Christi Lee, a GWC Member

We want to say a big thanks to Brian Grimes and family for putting this organization together. And also to the folks that came out to clean.

Jessica Chason, a GWC Member

To participate in the next cleanup effort stay posted here: FMR, for more information.

Brad Meyers, a GWC Member

Just a reminder of why we do this and what this is: “This is a group of people that believe it is important to keep our natural places beautiful and safe. Many people in our community love to fish, picnic, play and even fly remote control airplanes at the reservoir. More and more I have noticed a large amount of trash, cigarette butts, and even some things I don’t want to mention on here. It is time for those of us that care to make a difference.” ~Brian Grimes

Recap of G101.3 Battle of Bands

We had a great time watching the bands compete this past weekend at the Elks Country Club. There was quite a turn out of all ages. The bands really gave it their all and we all came out winners of this event.

Great concessions and bands promoting their gear. Some of the bands, Lipstick in particular, gave out tickets to upcoming events and other shows. I believe Shannon Scott, Lipstick’s drummer, gave out a drumstick or two.

Local businesses were there promoting their venues and offering coupons. It was a good family outing with some great live music!

Bands Lipstick and Torso Down will both be headlining Freedom Jam during the 4th of July weekend.
