Demolition of a landmark in Centerville/Wayne County Underway…

christmas pics and natco demolition 058

The old Natco is in the process of being torn down, and as you drive by you can witness the end to a long era.

Once a workplace to many parents and grandparents –and maybe great grandparents in Wayne County (including our grandpa Dennis Kendall) most of the site will be demolished for new endeavors.

If you have a story of the time you–or a family member—worked at Natco we would love for you to comment at the bottom of this blog with details.

According to the history blog by Dan Tate, in “1960-61 the NATCO operation is continued at the South N Street facility, until it was announced NATCO would purchase the former Bucyrus-Erie property [located in Centerville] and move their operation to that location in April, 1961.”

Old NATCO building coming down

The Bucyrus Erie property above is the current building located in Centerville built in 1909 for another factory and then used for NATCO once it was moved from it’s original site in Richmond in 1961.  Much earlier in 1909 the defunct NATCO of Dayton, Ohio, was acquired by W.F. Bockhoff and moved to Richmond, Indiana.

In 1990 it was reported that NATCO would close its doors after 89 years in business in Wayne County.  It was later bought by Charlie Mosey and used for warehousing and continued under different ownership in that same manner up until the recent purchase and demolition.

The current plan is to save the front office area of NATCO while the rest will be taken down.  As you can see in the picture above, the old NATCO sign is about ready to fall after decades atop the well known site of memories for many who worked there and drove past the building for decades.

We can now all look forward to what this new development will bring to Wayne County  (many in Wayne County would love to see an Olive Garden or Panera Bread in that location–and a nice shopping plaza).

Centerville IN…Bloomberg Names Best Place To Raise Kids In Indiana

Centerville High School Marching Band Practice

Centerville High School Marching Band Practice

Another tribute to the great resources of Wayne County…Centerville is named “the best place to raise kids in Indiana.”  With a population of only 2067, this study found it to be a safe community offering great educational and entertainment opportunities within driving distance.

As the study organized by Bloomberg Business Week stated “The…places we selected are neither rich suburbs nor havens for luxury living—so don’t expect to find mansions and elite country clubs (although some areas will have them). Rather, these are communities inhabited mostly by middle-income earners that have good public schools, low crime, and resources to keep the family entertained on weekends.”

Located In Centerville IN: Cope Environmental Center A Classroom Outdoors

To come to this conclusion that so highlights the positive aspects of Centerville and our county, “data from from Onboard Informatics, a real estate information and technology company in New York, …evaluated a total of 5,418 locations nationwide with populations larger than the state median but no larger than 50,000.”

Centerville also offers a wide variety of antique shops, Cope Environmental Center, a rich history and has been visited by celebrities and others as part of the “Antique Alley” trail.   In the past many have moved to Centerville as an option for public schools vs private school due to the excellence in education.

It also offers a great public library and good food at places like the Webb’s Antique Mall restaurant. As well, Centerville  IN offers shopping experiences like the Warm Glow Candle Outlet, also home to another popular restaurant,  and it’s factory which are located in Centerville.

A proud day for all of us who reside in Wayne County and especially for the residents of Centerville IN.  This makes our job at GoWayneCounty.com easier to have such great towns and resources to cover.

Congratulations Centerville!

Unique Toy Ideas For Christmas At Veaches…For 72 Years

If you are still frantically trying to finish your Christmas shopping and want unique and educational toy ideas, you may want to try the family owned toy store in Richmond–Veaches.

Many of us remember the birthday castle that used to be in the lower level and is now just inside the door.  And now the store carries an even greater selection of toys for all ages.  For train enthusiasts you won’t want to miss this opportunity to add to your collection or start a young family member on their journey to collecting.

For myself, I am in need of a set of people for the castle we are making our daughter for Christmas.  My first thought was to check Veaches toys store.  So tomorrow after work that is where I am heading.  Hope to see you all there…and remember Shop Local!!  (see the video below to learn a bit of the history of Veaches).

A Step Back In Time: Parker’s General Store Depot District

buy local poster

When you are looking for those last minute unique holiday gifts, put Parker’s General Store on your list of local places to shop.

After a recent remodel, Parkers/Mitriones is now an old fashioned general store which offers a huge variety of foods and gift items.   You’ll find natural rough wood floors and rows of Vintage candies and toys as well as hand made items by local craftspeople.  Also lining the shelves are imported beers and wine and gift basket ideas all over the store.  The hardware store is also still located in the general store.

And just like the old Woolworths we all visited as children in Richmond, after shopping you can stop and enjoy a treat from the vintage soda fountain.  Ice cream, malts, and shakes can be enjoyed while resting.

Or you can have a full meal from the deli or hot bar as well as a full salad bar.  I personally love the cabbage rolls and bean soup.  My daughter had the cheese lasagna and ate every bite.

Watch the video below to see some of the delectable foods and unique gift items .  And then hop on down to the Depot for a step back in time.  Located across from the old Depot under remodeling, you’ll be glad you picked this place to “Buy Local.”

First Woman To Reach 25 Years On RPD Retires

FTO, John Carico On Left

Captain Passmore On Left, Chief Wolski On Right

Janice Passmore, Captain on the Richmond Police Department retired Friday, December 17, 2010 after serving nearly 30 years as an officer, a detective and finally a Captain.

At the gathering for her retirement Police Chief Kris Wolski said that every officer hopes to “accomplish milestones while serving the community well,” he added that this was true of Captain Passmore in her time with RPD.  He continued to say that they “appreciate her service to the department and to the community.”  Chief Wolski wished Captain Passmore well in her future endeavors.

Janice made a short speech about her time with RPD.  She shared that she was “proud to say she had served the department for 29 plus years and to be able to serve the people of Richmond.”  She added it had not always been easy but she appreciated the people who taught her and were a friend to her “through thick and thin.”

Mayor Hutton With Captain Passmore

Mayor Sally Hutton

stopped in to congratulate Captain Passmore and to share in the celebration.  And a good friend and mentor, Jon Carrico came up from Florida, and was able to share in the recognition of her time with the department.  Carrico was Janice’s FTO (Field Training Officer) back when she started in the 1981.  One important piece of advice that Janice remembered Carrico saying during her training was to “always know where you are,” which sounds easier than it is considering all the unknown side streets in Richmond, according to Passmore.  Janice went on to become the first woman to make 25 years on the force.

Janice’s first choice for a career after high school was to become a physical education teacher.  However, at that time there was an abundance of teachers so she was counseled not to go that route.  Her dream job had been to be a police officer like the female officer portrayed by Angie Dickenson in the series “Police Woman.”

FTO, Jon Carrico On Left

But Janice thought this was “just television” and couldn’t be a dream realized.  Until the day that Captain Terry LaFuze came to talk to her class about working for the RPD and encouraged female students to consider this field.  And that marked the beginning of Officer Passmore’s road to serving her community for the next 30 years.

Captain Janice Passmore took her last ride patrolling Richmond that evening as she ended her day and her career with the Richmond Police Department.  Congratulations Captain Passmore on your accomplishments and we thank you for the many long years you served our community.

Reindeer help GAP with sales.

The reindeer, which are equipped with GPS, compete in various “contests” including tests for who moves the furthest, fastest, slowest or closest to the North Pole on a particular day. Each one is connected to a different deal. Emma, for instance, will get you 40% off your whole purchase. Chloe will get you all accessories in store for $5 each. (The video above shows the owner of the pasture is fairly perplexed about the whole thing.)
